1st Time Owner Of A Skink Blue Tail

Hi I am new to this forum but not on others, I had went to buy my leos some meal worms whne I saw this cute little blue tail skink (he is about 5 1/2 inches) and was in a tank with a REALLY BIG LEO and another one of it’s kind. I am interested in knowing what do you feed it? I was told wax worms and crickets.Does it need a water dish? it was on calcium sand at the store. I went and bought it and it was like in the 30’s degree in temperature I live like 7 blocks away from the pet store and they placed him in a plastic bag when I got home I thought he was dead, he felt cold and his eys was closed and he was lifeless I called the pet store and told them he was dead and was told to place him in the fridge and bring him in tomorrow but I noticed as I held him on the palms of my hand he did a little movment then I decided to place him under a basking bulb...15 minutes he was up and at it and ate a wax worm. Is this common or could he have died if he was out longer? He is really cute I’ll try to post pics tommorrow
Sandy

Don’t use waxworms as a stable diet. Their very high in fat. Also, It looked dead because all reptiles are cold-blooded, meaning that their inactive in cold weather

Is your skink a five-lined skink or a western skink? Five-lined skinks have a blue tail when they are young that turns greenish brown when they reach maturity. I have a five-lined adult female.
I alternate feeding with crickets and mealworms. Crickets one week and mealworms the next. I feed mine 3-4 crickets or 5-6 mealworms every 2-3 days. I would recommend dusting the insects with Reptivite every other feeding. Your skink does require a water bowl big enough to bathe in but easy to crawl in and out of. I rescued my little skink right out of my cat’s mouth 9 months ago and so far so good. Check out this caresheet. It helped me alot. Hope this helps. GL!

P.S.
Don’t use any type of sand as a substrate. Bad for your skinks skin and can lead to impaction and death. Clean potting soil with no fertilizer has worked best for me. It’s cheap, and Lizzy seems to really like it!

Thanks to both of your for responding. I read the caresheet you placed here and now I know that it eats meal worms I was adviced against at the pet store where I bought it. He has a blue tail so I think he is a five-lined skink, he is really cute. Can they be housed with another of it’s kind? how big does it get? Can I see a pic of Lizzy and her home to give me a better idea of how Brownie’s home should be (my son named it and I figure it’s a unisex name since I have no idea what sex it is)
