For those thinking about using sand with a BTS I have a Young BTS and i decided it to be kept on sifted Play Sand and for a few months. He did not seem very active. He would not eat as much and was not active very much. We i would pick him up out of the sand after he "Burrowed" actually more like sifting into the sand a little bit and there would be sand all in his eyes. They would be so full at times i had to use eye drops excesively to get it out. With lizards when they lick their eyes to get the stuff off of their eyes they ingest it. Which ment he was ingesting the sand. Overall he was getting sicker and sicker. I decided a few days ago to take all the sand out and put him on paper towels. He has been very active and has never turned down food. He even basks now. I am so glad. For those who wish to use sand i am not saying dont use it but be careful. If you see the same signs as my skink was showing please take him off of it. Hes in a 55 gallon. Hes about 10-12’’ long so its heaven in their for him. Also people please consider this. Although sand may look cool. Paper Towels are much much cheaper. I bought 2 bags of sand to fill my tank the required amount which was around 8-10$. 1/5 of a roll of papertowels will do and papertowels arent much at all. Please do not start a flaming on this catagory. If anything sugjest a certain type of ground. Now after the sand i have to give him mineral oil to get the sand out of him so it wont impact. ALSO his "fecies" werent always runny and crusty so please watch out for that too. His fecies arent like that anymore. Ty

For those thinking about using sand with a BTS If he eats all or at least most of his food from a dish, I’d say go with spahagnum moss or cyprus mulch. Eco Earth would work, but it’ll make his water dish a lot dirtier, making it harder to monitor normalcy of stools. However, if he’s going to be munching crickets on it all the time, it’s a better option. I’ve heard people suggest Carefresh, but it’s less humidty-friendly than the other two. In a tall, narrow, glass enclosure with a screen top, maintaining humidity is a big issue.

For those thinking about using sand with a BTS Aspen is fairly good, but in a 55 gallon tank, which is tall, it’s hard to keep good humidity. Most BTS are better in tanks with more floor space.

For those thinking about using sand with a BTS Yeah sure here it is! :)

my tank is a 40 gallon tank and that was half that came in the package, and I paid $15CAD for that, so it’s pretty cheap!
Thanks
