 I have a problem

Hi you may remember me a while back. I posted a request of tips for my Western skink Skinky Jr.
He’s the one that lost one of his back legs.

Anyways....I have another problem. I saw Skinky Jr. today and noticed that his other leg is losing toes. And i hear your supposed to soak their feet in water so that when they shed they get it all off. And the problem is ,is that i can’t hold him, he’s to wild.
I need tips or any info.

Thanks
Mike
Here are some old photos of him.

 I have a problem

When my skinks are really active, I just continue holding them until they calm down and let me hold them. Also, skinks are most active at night so if you do it at mid day he might be a little more docile and let you hold him. you just need to make sure you firmly grip your skink (without hurting him of course) until he calms down.
That’s what I did with mine anyways when my girl lost her nails.
Good luck! :)

 I have a problem

I also see another problem. Or what it seems to be, it looks like an infection is taking place on his face. This is most of the time caused by malnutrition in Calcium D3 and UVB light. Most lizard experts will say UVB light is not needed. I have read from my studies and experiances it is completely necasary. If the lizard is not cared for by having the food dusted with Calcium D3 and having a UVB light then physical deformities will begin. The jaw rot will look like something like a bad shed. A few scales will be missing and it will look red sometimes almost bent in like. The lower jaw also can become smaller and the skink will have a tough time eating. This can happen in almost any Skink from the Skink species. It can be easily cured if treated before it becomes to wide spread and to over rotted/deformed. The bottom jaw isnt the only part that gets bad. Just behind where their mouth will become a little bit swollen. Over a very short period if the lizard does not get calcium then it will become more swollen and swollen like what we would see as a "Cyst". This is very very uncomfortable for the lizard. The build up is of and blood. With out the calcium the blood circulation becomes worse and the lizards immunity systam becomes worse and worse. As the area gets infected the jaw will become sevirly deformed. The lizard wont be able to open its mouth and the skin/scales will not grow so interm the eyes in the eye socket can go down beneath the skin and also contract the disease. Its not just the jaw and eyes that get affected but also the brain. It travels up behind the skull into near the back of the brain. Though it has to be very late in the disease for this to happen. I feel terrible and upmost disapointed in myself to say this but it happened to my 5 Lined Skink. I did not notice it was happening because for the first week of the disease that side of the skull and flesh grows larger all at once so it is hard to notice. Then when it inflates it becomes very large very fast. What happened with mine is when i got back from a trip is it was so bad it started to aggitated the lizard so bad it was thrashing its head around and then one time it popped and the "Cyst" like flesh wound was a grousome sight. Dont be fooled even though how small the lizard gets mines full age and the "Cyst" got bigger than his head it size. 2 days after i got back when it popped i brought him to the vet. We had to get a thing of shots, special antibacterial medicine and the total was around 130$.

 I have a problem

Thank you for telling that to me but I further studied his head and most of the time his mouth today and have found no deformity nor swelling. He rarely eats crickets so i dust his mealworms. Do you have any tips on how I should hold him though, because I don’t want to hold in a way that makes him feel uncomfortable and I do not want to stress him out to much.

Thank you
Mike

Ok, i hold mine by either letting him go in my hand or i pick him up behind his front legs and then place him on my arm, or just cup your hand and hold him like that. They dont mind till you only really hold them upside down.

There really is no way you really can hold him without stressing him out. Just cup him up put him in a seperate container and soak him. He’s not going to like it at all, but it’s what’s best for him in the end

Hey buggy, its nice to see you around again.

I have noticed on my Bluetail that she recently lost 2 toes for no reason. I believe that they get caught on stuff and get pulled off. I wouldn’t worry too much. Theres not much you can do to prevent this, its just common.

Umm ok I wasn’t going to say anything, but i definatley feel the need to right now. So toes just get caught on things and randomly fall off huh/ Sure seems logical to me...AS IF. The main reson for loss of toes is shed layering up and making the toe fall off, or in some cases toe rot seems to be the problem. The best thing to do at this point is to buck up and soak him. It may not be easy, but in the end you gotta do what you gotta do. And yes you do need to worry about this. Saying you don’t need to worry about a loss of limbs, toes or otherwise, is like saying if a humans toes keep falling off it’s no big deal. Just my two cents

Alex
