well u got the tank & the water. try putting some sand in it for a few days and see wat happens and if nothing good gose on then put the rocks back in. but ask the pet store wat will be best for ur lizard cause some sand can hurt it.

I had a blue-tailed skink for nearly a year. My son and I caught him outside about a block away. We live in Northern Idaho, so we just made his enclosure as close to the environment that we found him in as possible. He will need a source of UVB light, and crickets smaller than his head to eat.

My skink loved the eco-earth you can find at Petco and other pet stores. You add water to a brick of this and it expands and becomes kind of a mulch. Then we added a large rock, for him to burrow under and some smaller rocks with moss that we found at petco. Don’t use stuff from outdoors unless you boil it first.

We also boiled and added pine cones and pine needles and a very shallow water dish that we bought at Petco. Mine didn’t usually use the water dish, but it is good to have one anyway. These skinks love to have their enclosure spritzed every night. Mine drank water droplets from the tank sides or from the pine cones/rocks in his enclosure.

We lost our skink today actually. He died we think from eating an oversized cricket that grew too large in his tank and couldn’t pass it. We gave him a warm bath on Saturday and thought he was doing better, but the little guy didn’t make it. He was almost a year old.

Good Luck.

I dont know that I’d use sand for a blue tailed (five-lined) skink. They do much better in the bark you can purchase at Petco or other pet stores. Its cheap and you only really need to completely change it out every few weeks. I am unaware of any Eumeces species that are prone to a sandy environment unless its way out in the southwest. They also prefer temperate climate and I would not let the tank get too hot. In a 10 gallon the lights can creep the heat up past 95 pretty quickly depending on the hood you’re using. 85-90 is a good daytime temp with night temps going down into the mid 70’s. If you’re using a hood with fluorescent the ReptiSun 5.0 should produce good heat, but a pad is still needed for the skink to warm up against after eating.

Good luck, hope this helps

Mine is in a 15 gallon, with eco earth for the substrate, a log and a rock, a water dish he likes to soak in sometimes, and a food dish. He eats dusted crickets, mealies, small supers, wax worms, etc. He’s really fun to watch when he’s out and about. I found him to be a lot more active when I put him up on a shelf away from the hub bub of the household. 85 is a pretty good temp for your warm end; where you have a 10 gallon it might be hard to get the right temp gradiant, a UVB and a small heat pad ought to do the trick. Good luck to you!
