would sand be a good thing for the ground of a 5 lined skinks 10 gallon tank if not what is good for it

What you should do is place 1-inch layer of pea gravel on the bottom of the enclosure and cover it with 2-3 inches of topsoil or organic potting soil but make sure none of these have had contact with any insectisides. But thats just what i would do.

The gravel on the bottom is more trouble than it’s worth. All it really does is make it harder to replace the substrate, so pinworms build up until the lizard gets sick. If you want to put something underneath the soil or Eco-Earth/Bed-a-Beast, I suggest lining the bottom with spahagnum moss. It’s not something you want them eating off of, because they can’t digest it if it gets swallowed and it’s hard to poop out, but it’s okay to burrow in, and it’s fairly resistant to bacteria even when moist.
Also, burrowing animals don’t always know that they’re not supposed to dig under the gravel. Sometimes they make it all the way to the bottom and then get trapped.
