 Got my tank!!

So I picked up this 55g tank for FREE last night. Took us like 2 hours to get there but it was totally worth it. He said I was the first one to email about it out of like 10 lol So anyway this is what I’ll be using for my BTS. Let me know what you guys think. It should work, right?

Now that I see it... you won’t have a problem fitting a bts in there! Very nice and congrats!

It’s me... MOnitor Again. Man I go through so many accounts it’s not funny. Anyway, that cage looks a bit too high the BTS probably wont use that space. And it doest look wide enough. what are the dimensions?

Well thats what I asked the guy that gave it to me but he didn’t mesure it. I should probably do that today. But it did look a little narrow to me, he used it for some sort of python and for turtles after that. I dont plan on buying an adult so it should work at least as a temporary tank if he ends up out growing it. But I shouldn’t have a problem with finding a new one. I wasn’t so much worried about the height as I was the width.

Monitor: Height doesn’t matter one way or the other as long as there is an appropriate heat source to reach the bottom.

It looks fine to me for a young one, and then just upgrade as it starts get full grown if it looks too small.

Nothing to worry about in the near future anyway.

UV lighting might be a bit of a problem. Apparently they say the distance between the lizard and the light is supposed to be between 12 and 19 inches. Maybe less than that, I’m not sure.

As for size, gallons aren’t really a good measure of how big an enclosure should be for a terrestrial lizard. What you want is floor space, and ideally the enclosure should be at least 1/3 times longer than the lizard’s total length and about half the lizard’s length in width. Of course, this is a minimum and bigger is always better.

I had always thought custom-made enclosures were better for large terrestrial lizards but that’s just me.

It does need to be within 12-18 inches as mentioned above, but they also don’t need a strong one so aim for a 5.0. One way to get your BTS within that range is to get those half log hides and put two next to each other. I have my female in a 90g bowfront which is 24 inches tall. I found that by putting these hides together it created a sturdy climbing area that was wide enough and still low enough to the ground for them.... that way its more like a little hill that they walk up rather than climb and fall off of. But it does allow her to get up another 6 inches to get within that good UV range.

^^^Sino: Check out the "terrarium treasures" brand of terrariums, they are a newer brand and are similar in style to the exo terras but with sliding doors and a lot more floor space and overall less cheaply made, they have a nice depth to them and are great for decent sized terrestrial lizards. They are hard to find though. But they are cheap and well made which tends to be an uncommon combination!
