Baby five lined skink dropped his tail.

My five lined skink dropped his tail and I have no clue why. How long will it take to grow back? Its a baby so his tail is blue and I was wondering if it will grow back blue. Thanks!

This completely depends on the skink and the conditions you have it in. I’ve known of one that has grown back to its original length and colour, you can’t even tell it isn’t the original tail. Others I’ve seen have barely grown back and look stumpy and brown. What caused him to drop his tail?

Just in my experience, the less stressed, and the more well fed (not in amount but quality) the better it grows back. But this is just IMHO.

He was most likely startled by something. Lizards will drop their tails as a defense mechanism to through off a predator. I don’t know of any other reason one would do that. Were you holding it when it dropped? They really aren’t a species that can be handled. I don’t touch mine at all. Using a small plastic container with a meal worm in it is a great way to transport the animal when necessary, i.e. tank cleaning.
