 What animal can...?

Hey guys!

Ever since my last rat had to be put down (she was nearly 4!) I’m feeling lonely in my room. I used to have my colony of rats, but over the past year, two had to be put down, and one died (still waiting on the necropsy... she was healthy.. so I’m thinking it was something internal) I feel lonely.

My mom’s been adamant about not having any more animals. But since I couldn’t sleep with out a wheel squeaking, (i actually downloaded a recording to play so I could sleep, yes I’m weird!) she’s caving. The thing is: Space is limited to a ten gallon tank, or cage of similar size.

So here’s my critical:

Happily live it’s life in a ten gallon tank or a cage of similar size
Be interactive
Easily tamable
Fun to watch
Easy diet (lab blocks would really be best)

Thanks for all your help!

Gerbils!! My two gerbils have lived in a 10 gallon tank for about 7 months now. Im getting them a tank topper, so they can have more room for a wheel. Gerbils are easily tamed (mine were tamed when i got them already) My gerbils love handling. And boy are they fun to watch! Mine sit next to the tv, and i think i watch their tank more then the actual tv! lab blocks will work, but its good to buy a commercial mix. i mix my own gerbil food.

Have you ever considered leaning the reptile way? I think you would REALLY enjoy Hermit Crabs. I think I’ve actually seen you over there a couple times, haven’t I? But I don’t really remember. I love playing with my friend’s crabs and they are just amazing to watch!

Gerbils! You’d need a pair, and they would need a lot of time outside of the cage if you had them in a 10, or you could do a 10 gallon with a cage topper (no more width, just height). They are very fun and active and great to watch, they are fast though so you have to work on taming them to calm down when you have them out : )

Good luck!

Anyone have any links on gerbil care? Or can show me a decent sized cage? (I’ll have to talk to mom about the cage topper if that counts against me, lol!)

Link
It’s pretty similar to rats, clean once a week, carefresh or aspen bedding, Mazuri food pellets supplemented with vegetables and greens (extra greens for gerbils), etc.

Any other ideas besides gerbils? I’d like to stick mammals, thanks though, Jeni. My mom doesn’t like their look :(

How about a hamster? You just need lots of obstacles They are really fun to watch. the one i had lived almost 5 years he was a teddy bear hamster i think(long fur). All the ones i had burrowed under the bedding which is a natural home.

Good luck

Breeder: I’ve had a hedgehog. He sadly died of cancer at age 3, and I don’t think I can go through that heartache again, but thanks for the suggestion.

I’ll look into degus, thanks.

The cage needs to be a 10gallon tank or similar size. Those animals are too big for that required size :(

Thanks guys. I’m looking into convincing my mom for gerbils. She thought the babies were cute when I held some at our local pet shop... so maybe. I love their tails, lol!

id say gerbils too, though i have 2 in a 30 gallon and they seem cramped in there! i think 10 is waaay too small for them to live happily, remember they do grow some from the small size they are at pet shops. my 2 boys are now 3 years old and still going strong, very very tame, if i put my hand in the tank they come and sit on it waiting to come out. my own personal opinions are that 10 gallon tanks are not suitable permanent housing for any animal, apart from maybe a pair of mice but only with a cage topper. it would be like living your whole life in a cupboard! but i suppose this is your call, me personally,if i only had room for a 10 gallon tank space, i wouldnt get a pet. you say you had rats in your room, how did you fit their big cages in? surely if you could fit in large rat accomodation you could make a little more room for a bigger cage for your new pet??? good luck with finding a new friend though
