What do you think this is?

I took my ham Evan out last night and was going to kiss his belly when I noticed it was very red. It’s hard to tell, but it looks like there is a lump under his arm. But with all of the extra skin it’s so hard to tell if it’s an inflamed spot or an actual lump. My first thought was tumor, but almost his entire belly is red. There is another spot by his leg that has little red spots on a bald spot. There’s a few on his side also. This is the best picture I could get. I can try and get more but really I don’t know if I can...you know how hamsters are. I really would like to take him to the vet, even though this doesn’t seem to be bothering him. I thought maybe it was mites since it is balding. What do you think? Ask me any questions to help me figure this out. Usually we take our animals to the vet as soon as they need it, but my dad is having work troubles (about to go on strike), and we just spent a few hundred on my leo a few days ago. So he doesn’t want to take Evan in until he starts acting like something is wrong.
It looks lumpier than it really looks...agh...it’s hard because I have to scruff him and hold him to see it. There’s not way to just flip him over to see what it really looks like. So this is all pulled up...

What do you think this is?

He’s by himself. Other than diabetes he’s never had any other problems. I’ve been watching him, and maybe he is pulling it out...but why? He’s on carefresh, which I prefer but do you think maybe he’s allergic to it? He hasn’t been on it for very long. Only a couple of months, and maybe I just didn’t notice it through the fur...but now that it’s gone I can see. It’s not too squishy. Just feels like skin. I can’t tell if it’s a bump, or his arm under skin lol. He’s kind of chubby and very "skinny" if you know what I mean. I’ll try to get better pics of all the spots. I’m going to put him in a clear container and see if I can take pics from the bottom so I don’t have to wrestle with him.

No. There’s just little red spots on it. And the skin is very red. Shouldn’t it be lighter pink?

What do you think this is?

it could possibly be the bedding maybe it is itching him? i find that the plain carefresh is very itchy and i break out from it

sometimes they pull out their hair when they have internal problems maybe stomach problems or something or skin problems sometimes they do this out of stress

do you feed him pellets as well as seed? yu might want to try those too b/c they are more nutritionally complete b/c theannot pick out their favorites

What do you think this is?

Yeah I usually give him a little bit of plain pellets, but at the moment I’m out. I also give him a handful of fresh hay a few times a week. I think he is pulling, because I looked closer again and I see a few scabs. I’ll switch to a different bedding to see if I notice a change. And I will get him more pellets. Should I switch to aspen?

What do you think this is?

RINGWORM!! Don’t worry, it’s a mild skin fungus similar to athlete’s foot. It’s not deadly. If you bring him by Animal Talk on Saturday I can put him under the black light to make sure (ringworm glows under black lighting) and give him a fungal bath for you. It’s possible that a spore was hidden on one of the rats you’re fostering (we do a lot of ringworm kitty rescue because other shelters have to put them to sleep).

Let me know if you want to bring him by, but I’m pretty sure that’s what it looks like (though the photo is blurry and I doubt you could get a better one on a dwarf hamster lol).

What do you think this is?

BTW, it is VERY contagious to all other animals (including yourself). After handling him or anything in his cage, wash your hands with a 10% bleach solution. Soap won’t kill it. Or you can use surgical gloves when handling him. Keep him in a separate room away from other animals (like the bathroom where it is easy to sterilize) for the next six months. Sounds like a long time, but spores can hide in fur even if the animal doesn’t have active spots and it takes that long for him to replace his coat).

Sorry, ringworm is a pain : (

What do you think this is?

If it’s ringworm...he may have gotten it from me
I’ve been battling with it for a few months lol. Ehhhh...hmm...hehehe...
I think the rats will be ready soon. I don’t have any transportation Saturday, but maybe next weekend I will bring the fosters back. They’ve made a TON of improvement.
Can fleas carry ringworm? Cause the spots I had it in started as what I thought were flea bites...which I’m very familiar with...

What do you think this is?

No, fleas don’t carry ringworm. I suppose a spore could travel on one, but it’s extremely unlikely.

BTW, ringworm is quite contagious. I’d recommend being very careful about spreading it to your animals. If your kitties get it, it’s SUCH a pain to give them a bath every other day lol.

Good luck!

What do you think this is?

This does not look like ringworm to me . It is usually dry and scaly almost like a light scab .It could be since you have had it but I would find out for sure before it gets worse. I would defiantly change the substrate until you know what it is and keep the cage as clean as possible .No one can diagnose your pet over the internet . I would take him into a vet asap . If it were mites you would see tiny red or black dots in the bottom and corners of the cage if you look closely .She would also be scratching all the time .Let us know what the vet says .

What do you think this is?

Rodents with ringworm will have patches of hair loss which look like circular scaly areas with raised edges. In most cases, ring worm is not itchy. The ring worm actually works its way outwards from the initial point of contact hence the circular zone looks to be expanding (the innermost area of the lesion is the area already healing and the outermost raised area is the area where the ring worm is the most active). Ring worm generally appears as spots around the head, ears, tail and feet of animals. The symptoms an animal shows can be very variable. Some animals show little or no hair loss at all and seem relatively unperturbed whilst others have marked hair loss with pronounced scaly lesions which can extend to the whole body.

Based on the description, I’m not too sure if your hamster’s got ringworm.

It’d be best to go to your local vet and get a skin scraping and such.

What do you think this is?

Skullkeeper, I told her to bring the animal in to the pet store I work at (where she fosters rats for us) so that I could check it under a black light. Of course I can’t diagnose it over the internet, that’s why I said I couldn’t be sure based on the photo.

Seems likely since Kaitlin has ringworm herself. I deal with ringworm every day, we have about thirty rescue cats with ringworm, and all my animals have had it when I got it at the rescue.

Your right that ring worm looks like a small ring with a raised edge , this does not look anything like ringworm . I have seen many cases. We actually agree , take it to a vet asap.

What do you think this is?

She needs to take it to a qualified vet . The employees at the pet store are not qualified to diagnose or treat any animal. Its a wonder that animals survive at all in most pet shops considering the morons that work there . There should be laws about properly training the personnel on every animal they carry.

Okay now all you kiddies that have a job at Pet Smart you can throw your little fits now .

What do you think this is?

Wow Skullkeeper. You just took that WAY too far. I have worked at this pet store since I was ten. It is my entire life and I love it there. It is most certainly NOT a %&$&^*@ PETSMART!! ANYONE can put an animal under a black light to determine if it has ringworm. We do it every single day. It is a very quick way to decide whether or not it is a harmless skin fungus or something she needs to spend $200 at the vet on.

I work/volunteer in a pet store that has been here for twenty years. The owner is like my mom. It is also a no kill, non profit cat rescue and I work with vets every single day. I KNOW HOW TO DIAGNOSE A FRIGGIN SKIN FUNGUS.

We spend approximately $1000 on vet bills just on the store animals alone per MONTH. The cats are an entirely different story (somewhere around 10-15 thousand a month). I take DAMN good care of the animals there and I spend all my time researching them. I was there from 9 am-11 pm yesterday just taking care of animals, writing biographies, putting cats on the internet, and treating a new rescue leopard gecko for mouth rot.

You know nothing about me. You have no idea who I am, or where I work, or what I do, or how much time, energy, and money I spend on the animals in my care, whether or not they are mine. You know nothing about my animals. You have no idea how much money I spend on them, or on taking them to the vet. You know nothing about where I want to go to school, what I want to do, where I want to go, or where I want to work. You have no concept of my life or my abilities and the fact that I am sixteen does NOT make me less competent than anyone else with a light that plugs in.

You also know nothing about Kaitlin or her animals or how I know her. BACK OUT, ok? You’re like a five year old.

From now on, I will not be responding to your posts because I am tired of being insulted. I will simply report you every time I see you post something rude and pm the person you are posting it to with the correct information and ask them to also report you.

Have a great day. And please attempt to grow up. Has it crossed your mind that you spend about an hour a day bickering with kids? Don’t you have better things to do with your time?

p.s. I have never seen a photo of any of your animals, or of yourself. These forums are here to build a community of animal lovers. I have never heard you say that you love animals, or tell us about the ones you have. Perhaps I missed them, could you please link me to some? I really am interested in what goes on in your head.

To put it in the words of the "simple minded":

I am willing to bet anyone here that that is ringworm, or a similar skin fungus.

Wow Skullkeeper. That post was completely rude and unnecessary. I can see that you are intentionally trying to imply that Dragongirl6 does not care for the animals she has. Which is, as far as I know, very untrue. From what I’ve seen on these forums, she pays excellent attention to every animal that comes under her care. She does not work at Petsmart- she’s stated numerous times where it is that she works, which also happens to be a no-kill shelter. I admire that she chooses to work at a rescue, as well as her dedication to animals. I appreciate how she takes the time to state her opinions/knowledge (with reason!) on these forums-which is more than I can say for you Skullkeeper. I don’t know why you are trying to start arguments, but if you feel that you need to post such negative comments, it’s best that you not post on other people’s messages until you can think out what you want to say logically.
