 Rat babies - Pic Heavy!

So I adopted a litter of ratties. And I have some pictures of them that I would like to share.

Now these aren’t in any particular order. Hope you enjoy!

Adorable babies!! They are way too cute. Make sure you are using aspen or carefresh bedding, though. Pine and cedar are both highly toxic to ratties. Also, glass cages do not have enough ventilation for rats and the phenols in their urine build up and are toxic to them.

Lol, not to nag, just some tips. I raise, breed, show, and rescue rats and I love them!!

Good luck with the babies!

They’re currently on Aspen bedding.

And I’m currently changing half the bedding (ish) every other day...To try and cut down on that... The wire cages I have right now are just too small to house mama and all the babies.. But when I separate them, they’ll be in wire cages.

Sounds good. Good luck with them! Try giving mom a full box of kleenex lol. She will rip out each one and make incredible nests. : D

I don’t know what’s on her tail, I thought it was blood at first too.. But she has no cuts, and it’s kind of pinkish now.. I don’t know what it is, she came to me like that.

She’s a very difficult rat to handle (I have to use gloves), and I understand it’s probably because of her babies.. But she’s very, very nippy. I try to handle her as much as possible, but it seems to stress her out more than anything, and it’s making me kind of nervous. Now, just because she’s not socialable doesn’t mean she’s a goner, right?

Will I still be able to make a pet out of her? Or will I have to wait until the babies are weaned to see?

It’s possible that she is shy/unsocialized in general, but chances are that she is mostly being defensive of her babies. You’ll have no way of knowing how tame she is until her babies are weaned and separated. Keep her with one of the female babies to keep her company and see how her personality is once the rest are gone. Even if she is shy, she’ll make a good pet. She will still run on a wheel, enjoy time out of the cage, eat, sleep, and drink like any other rat, she’ll just need a bit more patience on your part.

Good luck with her, and keep us updated.

Just offer her treats by ahnd and talk to her and dont worry abut handling her till the babies are weaned. Then you can work with her more and she should be less nippy
