 Update!

I posted something about my blue hooded rat a little over a week ago. I think it had a subject like "Has anyone experienced this before?." I took him to the vet yesterday(an hour and a half away) and he is now on a strong antibiotic. The vet thinks that it is either a severe infection, and if the antibiotics don’t work, the only other option is caner, in which case there is really nothing that the vet can do besides prolong Jin’s life until the inevitable happens. I really hope the antibiotics work.

 Update!

Sorry to hear that! Usually antibiotics work pretty well for rats, so hang in there. Please keep us updated!

 Update!

Thanks Dragongirl6. Oh, I forgot to mention that the vet ruled out glaucoma(he used a weird pen shaped thing to check eye fluid pressure), and fatty deposits behind the eye as possible causes.

 Update!

Well that’s good. If it is a tumor somewhere it might be easy for the vet to remove (so long as you’ve got the money lol).

How old is the rat again?

 Update!

He’s about a little over a year and a half old. If it is caner, it would be inoperable. It would be behind his eye, most likely in his brain. That’s why if the antibiotics don’t work, he and I are SOL.

 Update!

I have finished the course of antibiotics. They didn’t work. The eye is still bulging. I also ran out of the pain killer he was on, and the pain is still there (I wasn’t sure if we still in pain, so I ran out on purpose to check.) I’m working on saving a little more money to get an X-ray taken of his head; that’s what the Doc told me would be the next thing to do if the antibiotics didn’t work. I’m so sad. My little Jin hurts and I can’t seem to help him. :(

How can you tell hes in pain? Is he eating and acting normally or abnormally. You may want to have him put down. I would not want him to be suffering .

 Update!

For my rats respirtory infection it took 2 courses of antibiotics. Keep working with him unless you think hes in a lot of pain, then Id consider the options

 Update!

I can tell he’s in pain, or at the very least very uncomfortable, because he makes a little squeaking noise when he’s just sitting there, and he looks very uncomfortable. He just isn’t himself. He’s on some pain meds though, and they work great. I’m going to continue looking for whats wrong. The antibiotics didn’t help at all; he took them for two weeks. It was a sulfa-antibiotic and those are super powerfull, the vet told me. I’m going to take some x-rays and have them sent to the small animal specialist vet that I was refered to. (It’s far away, so I’m just going to have my regular vet take them and send them up.)

 Update!

Hey everyone,
Jin has cancer. :’( The x-rays showed that it hasn’t involved the bone. But it’s on the side of his face and causing his eye to bulge; there’s really nothing they can do. :( He’s on a drug that reduces swelling, and it works pretty good. He’s getting weekly injections. He also still gets his pain meds. I just have to make him comfortable till’ it’s time for him to go. He also can’t eat hard things anymore cause’ his mouth hurts him. I’ve been soaking his pellets and making them mushy for him. I’ve been mixing in a little bit of ferret vite, a high calorie gooey treat for ferrets, and sometimes banana, or some kind of soft food, in there too. Does anyone know a good soft food recipe for rats? Any help would be appreciated.

if he can still eat the blocks just not chew ’em...i’d soak them in ensure or soy baby formula and then when at least semi soft toss ’em in the blender. also make a mix of veggies and fruits in the blender. offer a bit of baby food, etc. that is what i do for super young wild rat pups besides feeding them formula itself of course. you might have to have three or four little dishes unless you know he won’t mind mixed flavors. good luck.

 Update!

Do you mean people baby formula, or is there a formula for rats? Thanks for the info Manderzratz, I will try that. And I have noticed that he’s not too picky about mixed flavors. Anyone else have any ideas?

 Update!

baby food for humans. i use enfamil pro sobee. but i think any soy baby formula would do. if he isn’t picky try different things out and see what gets him to eat the most. i have done this with babies and it works well when they have no mom. when using the baby food (not formula, the little jars) try to not only get chicken & apples, etc. but others too since the blocks and soy baby formula will already have a bit of protein to them and you don’t wanna over do it. that’s all i can think of at the moment. hope he enjoys it.

 Update!

I had to let Jin go last Thurs. :’( He refused all but the smallest amounts of food, even his favorites, and he just seemed so uncomfortable. I decided to let him go with at least some dignity left. He had some necrosis on his bottom jaw; the cancer was cutting off blood supply to his face. I could not watch that anymore. And even with all the meds he was taking he seemed to get worse, not better. Rest in Peace little buddy.
