Need a small pet If you’re thinking about small pets in terms of rodents, I would advise against it. Aquariums do not provide adequate ventilation, especially in hot/humid climates like Florida.
A pair of firebelly toads, however, would do nicely in a tank that size and with the right setup are very easy to keep.

Need a small pet Oh rats are absolutely wonderful pets. Over the years I’ve had a total of twenty of them (including my current two) and couldn’t imagine ever not having at least one.
But they don’t do well in aquariums and a ten gallon would be much too small for a rat even without the ventilation issues.

Need a small pet In terms of rodents I would say your best bet would be either a pair of mice or a dwarf hamster (or two) they are really the only rodent that would do OK in there.... but I would try to get a cage topper (a wire cage that sits on top and adds a few lvls) that way they can have a place to be where the air flows lol... and what I did with mine was put some plastic craft stuff (looks like a bunch of little squares stuck together) and put that on there and it did fine... plus the topper makes it much easier to add a water source lol

Need a small pet i have decided to get an aft so far... my mom said no rodents because she thinks that with the heat the cages would stink. i want a pet that lives more than a few years anyway. when i go to college my mom will take care of my lizard and i won’t be getting a dorm so i can come home and care for him/her (i don’t have one yet)

Need a small pet its infuriating to see when people post that a pair of gerbils can live happily in a 10 gallon tank,my 2 are in a 30 gallon tank and look cramped, i pity any gerbils kept in such tiny accomodation. hopefully you will find a suitable small pet to live in your tank, a small lizard or something, i dont know much abotu their living needs etc so i cant comment there. good luck.

Need a small pet I agree. I would never sell/adopt out a pair of gerbils at our pet store to someone with a ten gallon. Most people who come in to rescue or buy are looking for just one and have only a ten gallon tank. Twenty minutes later they leave with a pair and a cage topper for that same tank, lol.
Just imagine being confined to the equivalent of a ten gallon tank for a person. That’s one small room, and they don’t get to just walk out the door to run around or explore anything. They have to stay in that space unless you are there to take them out. And frankly, I know almost no one who lets their gerbils run around for at least an hour every day like they should.
Therefore, a ten gallon tank is much too small for two gerbils, or two of anything for that matter. A pair of mice could be ok in a 10 gallon if it is cleaned often and they are allowed to run around for a good period of time every day, but why not just get a cage topper or a 20 gallon tank? It isn’t much more expensive and is much better for the animals...
Besides, it doesn’t have to be cleaned quite as often and is easier to maintain.

Need a small pet I got a little impatient and didn’t see if Spiny mice were mentioned? They are awesome little guys and the DO NOT smell at all (though you do still need to clean their cage). And I’m pretty sure a pair can live in a 10 gallon. I would suggest bigger though. Perhaps add a topper. A ten gallon is only good for fish, or a small reptile/amphibian of some sort.

Need a small pet Spiny mice are a great idea although a cage topper would be good. They don’t have the normal rodent smell and are so cute to watch.

Need a small pet how about fish?! They require little care and are fun 2 watch. Goldfish would need a water cooler since you live in florida.
