Hamster food recipes and nutrition (prepare to read!)
So the realization that my hammie Evan isn’t going to live forever has been haunting me and I’m now obsessed with hamster nutrition to give him the best remaining life possible (hopefully at least another year). He’s my little bear. I’ve been researching any homemade recipes like there are for rats and haven’t found as many for hamsters surprisingly. I also have to keep in mind that he is diabetic and that narrows my results even more...I’m even thinking about doing more research and creating my own recipe to share with the world! It’s a little ridiculous...maybe I’m looking in the wrong places. So I’ve found a few things and thought of putting these things together for a stable healthy diet. I found a little seed mix recipe that is specifically for diabetic hamsters BUT I don’t know if I can trust it. From what I’ve been reading hamsters need a lot of grains. This has none in it, but I’m hoping I can work from it and add or take out more things. I want to stay away from salty things and things with preservatives. * Sunflower seeds * Flax seeds * Pumpkin seeds * Dry Lentils (What are lentils?) * Pine nuts(optional) * Soy nuts (optional) Exactly what kind of grains? I’ve seen all of this at the health food store where I get my rat food ingredients, so I’m confident I can mix up a nice food with no problem. To that I want to add the grains, and lab blocks. What brand of lab blocks? I’ve never seen any at stores but maybe I can order some hamster blocks online. Also, his hair that he lost has been growing back wonderfully and his skin is turning pink again. I know a lot of you said it might be nutrition, so I started giving him a tablespoon of Koshi cereal every other day (still figuring out the carbs) to be safe, a small bit of fresh hay, and mixing in some pellets. I also got a different kind of viatamin to add to his food. I can’t find any for water, and I can’t find any specifically for hamsters, so he only gets a couple drops in his food every other day. All of this added to Hazel Hamster diet with peas, corn and the orange and black bits he doesn’t like picked out. There are some grains in it. It has toasted wheat, dehuiled soybean meal, ground whole wheat...hmmm. I want to start giving both Evan and my rats more fresh vegies weekly. What kind of vegies besides romaine lettuce can I give to Evan? Are carrots ok? Peas? Any kind of roots? (Lol that’s a silly question) Am I doing things right? Sorry I have so much to ask lol. I’m very interested and concerned about this. Also when Evan crosses the rainbow bridge (it will be very devastating) I will probably look in to another hamster. It’s so funny because hamsters never really were my type of pet but since I got Evan I just love them now lol. If I don’t get enough responses here, I will post this in a hamster forum, but for now I’m more comfortable on RZ. If I do take this to the hammie forum I will report back what I hear for anyone interested. Diet is very important and I’d be more than happy to share my findings. Thanks for any help! References welcome!
