 Rat question

Ok so I do not have any rats currently, but I have had them before I just want to know if it would be safe for rats to have a container of soil to dig around in and find food in?

I am going to college in a year and I am planning on getting 3 or 4 female rats.

And if you know of any other types of enrichment that you could think of please tell me. I am a little boring when it comes to thinking of things like this lol.

 Rat question

I would think it would be fine depending on where you got the dirt from? and as long as there was nothing bad in the soil (parasies bacteria etc) but I am no rat expert :)

If your talking about like in addition to their cage an area with soil?

Id do kids play sand. Even in organic soil theres lots of things than can cause problems

 Rat question

It would be easier to just have a bin of small animal bedding and bury food in it. Soil can get in their eyes and be eaten, and both sand and soil would get stuck to all the food you buried in it.

Just pick a different kind of litter from the kind you use in the cage. They make a small animal litter made of corn cob, which would work well for what you want. Another good game is putting some veggies and other treats into a paper bag and rolling it up. They shred the bag and toss it around to get to the food.

Good luck!
