Dwarf hamsters are cute, but generally not as friendly as Syrian (regular sized) hamsters so are more of a pet to look at rather than touch. They are also morel likely to escape. For these reasons, I wouldn’t recommend them for such a young kid.

Hamsters in general aren’t as friendly as mice and rats. They are solitary animals by nature so don’t usually really enjoy peoples’ attention, but if you handle them every day they do ok.

Go for a Teddy Bear or Black Bear Syrian hamster, and males tend to be more docile. The cage should preferably be wire, and as large as possible. You can get them use on craigslist for great prices.

You want to use carefresh bedding. It is softest, dust free, and won’t build up phenols that are toxic to hamsters. Aspen shavings are acceptable as well. You should start the hamster on whatever food he is eating before you get him, but should probably switch him to Mazuri hamster pellets. They are much healthier. Supplement with veggies, greens, and bits of cooked chicken or canned dog food.

Look for a breeder or local pet store in your area other than petsmart. Hamsters in large chain stores tend to be far less healthy, inbred, and less friendly than those raised by breeders or hobbyists. Sometimes litters of babies are on craigslist as well, just make sure your hamster is healthy before adopting/buying.

Good luck!

another reason why robos are not the best is b/c they are more of a look dont touch hamster b/c they are rediculously fast

almost impossible to catch lol

anyway yes a syrian would be best b/c they are bigger and tend to be a little nicer

I really suggest finding some on CL or something where they have been hand raised and socialized. Petsmart and Petco just aren’t the best place to get them. You don’t really want to support what they’re doing, either. My Russian dwarf hamster is the sweetest I have ever met but I have been in his life since day one. I also don’t suggest them for a younger person if they are from a pet store. But if you get it from someone who has had it since it was born and socialized it, you might as well check for yourself to see how nice it is, ya know?
