PetLand has ridiculously high prices on their dogs and they come from puppy mills, therefore supporting them.Any one that shops these stores are supporting them also. You will only catch me at my local Mom and Pops.

The ones by where I live don’t have puppies, but I really don’t like how they care for the other animals. They mix a lot of amphibians together, which is a big no-no...and the reptile care is probably 10 times worse than that :(

yes they are not great

but if you are supporting them b/c of the hospital? thing

patsmart does alot with charities they have raised millions and have saved over 3 million pet lives and they gave alot of help with the whole katrina disaster

they also do not sell cats, dogs, or rabbits b/c soooo many are in shelters already waiting for a home

now while there care of animals varies from store to store they really do try to do eveything for the pets(although IMHO they could always do better)

It is never a good idea to support a place just based on what they give money to or what they raise for charity or whatever. Petco raises money for rescue animals and hosts adoption events at their stores. Why? Good publicity. They get so many customers by doing those things, and they even earn the support of local rescues and shelters.

Just because a store gives money to a hospital, doesn’t mean they have good intentions or even that they aren’t misleading you about how much they actually support an organization.

Besides, why is a pet store giving money to a human hospital? Hospitals are businesses that benefit people, not animals, and in the majority of cases (probably the hospitals receiving the money) they aren’t really in need of donations. Hospitals that do need donations are in rural areas of the country where donations somehow never find them. Find more information about their set up with the hospitals, and I’ll bet you don’t find anything too inspiring : P

Anyway, stick to your local pet stores and rescues.

People talk with such reverance about their local "mom and pop" pet stores, but are they really any better than the corporate ones?

I know that in my area they certainly are not. Their cages/aquariums are small, crowded and dirty. The animals often have little or no food or water available. Species that are not compatible are often mixed together (FBTs housed with other herps, rats and mice caged together) and sick animals are allowed to simply die without ever receiving medical attention.

In my area at least, it doesn’t matter whether you shop at the corporate stores or at those of "the little guys," you’re still supporting a bunch of heartless jerks.

I work at a local pet store, it isn’t like that at all! Either way, buying food from a local pet store, no matter what, is better than supporting a chain.

Anyway, it depends on where you are and what you are looking for.

Because of the corporate giants the little pet shop are being strangled and that is why they try to save space and the no food thing is a marketing style.

 Is petland okay?

that is what my local petstores are like
we i know it is not a money thing

they have always been filthy we didnt get any corporate stores until anout 5 yrs ago

this store has always been dirty

they house male and femals together(small animals)

the tanks are always filthy you can barly see in them and it does not cost anything to clean a tank

they know nothing about reptiles all ore on the walnut bedding treefrogs, lizards turtles everything

they feed food bigger than the geckos heads

it is b/c they dont have any knowlege abouth the animals and they dont try to learn

i was telling the lady about them one day and she told me she had been keeping them on that subsrate for years and bla bla bla she would not listen

eveyone in our town says how horrible they are

but in petsmart(i work there) customers are always coming in saying how great our tanks look and how clean they always are and how helthy and nice animals

so while i do think "mom and pop" stores are great if they dont want to do the work it takes to have a nice facility they should not be open

no one wants to buy an animal that is cramped and dirty

Well I believe I’ve been to PetLand when I was in Texas. I actually really liked the store. They let you interact freely with the kittens and small animals, and as long as you have someone with you that’s at least 18, you can play with the puppies in a private pen as long as you want with toys and everything. All the puppies were in good health. All the animals were kept in clean, secure, adequate environments, the prices were actually decent there (instead of the $300 fee our local petstore charges, they only charged $40 for vetted kittens), and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable.

Hi,
Each store is different. In general here in Ohio ,Petland was buying their dogs from puppy mills . I think they way over charge on all animals but for the most part they take pretty good care of their animals . Pet Smart on the other hand I would not even enter that store .

There may not be to many pet store options in some towns .

No one can say what the Petland is like in your town unless they have seen it . Use your own judgment . No pet store is perfect . Look and see if the cages are clean, large enough, proper food , water and lighting . You can also check and see if they have had any violations with the humane society and check the better BBB. Ask friends and neighbors if they have bought any pets from this store . Word usually gets around if a shop is selling sick animals .

I also put a lot of stock in your intuition or gut feelings Spend time talking to the employees and handling the animal you might buy . Do not buy on impulse .good luck.

i live in ohio too and i know of 2 petland that were sut down one day

where about do you live? i live close to mansfield

the workers didnt even know it was going to happen

they cam to work one day and were told this isyour last day at work

but what i thought was weird was one day i was in there and they had about 10 puppies just running all over the store !!!!

i could have easily stolen a couple of them the were only 2 employees and they were both playing with the puppies closest to them!!!(not that i ever would)

it was crazy and then they were wondering why they were losing money lol

I live in Columbus . We had one that closed but they went out of business . I do not know if they were a reputable pet shop or not . There is only two that I go to here. Jack’s Aquarium and Jeff’s Pet shop. I believe that both are privately owned , I know Jeff’s is a family run shop.

I think you have to look at the shops on an individual basis .
