 Rat with tumor

So I have a 2 year old rescue rat who got a mammary tumor like 6 months ago. The vet removed it and spayed her at the same time for like $200 or whatever. She has been completely healthy since then (though a bit lazy and fat in her old age). Now she is developing another tumor, *sigh*.

She is happy now, so I will keep her for a bit longer, but will probably have to put her to sleep soon. Is it mean to keep her alive now? Should I wait until it gets uncomfortable or have her put down sooner?

I do not want to have the tumor removed at this point. She is getting old and the tumors will just continue to come back. Endless surgeries would be very stressful on her (if she survives them).

Mostly I’m just sharing, lol.

as long as the tumor isnt preventing her from doing rat things or eating and the like and its not hurting her (which tumors generally dont from what i know) so no its not mean or cruel to keep her alive unless like i said its preventing her from something... I wish you luck with your old gal :)

She is getting old so it’s not uncommon for her to develop tumors . I know how she feels .I have one on my spine . Most are not at all painful. I would not put her to sleep unless she seems to be in pain. They might look ugly but as long as she can function ,I would hold off on putting her to sleep.Getting out sucks,LOL.

Thanks everyone. Her name is Petunia. She’s an old rescue, I think the second rescue I ever kept. She has always hated me and always will, lol. But she LOVES the other rats so I just let her be and force her to be held every few days so I can check on her.

She looks like one I had . I love the hooded rats .The name is cute to. I remember crying with my boyfriend the day mine died . She was old and had two tumors on her tummy back by her legs .You really do get attached .Some times I think you love the difficult or mean ones most I think because you have to spend more time with them. The problem child,LOL

Lol, that’s so true! I loved Stanley also. He was my second rat, and my first rescue rat. I was the only one he never bit (except when I shoved my hand in front of him to prevent him from biting a customer). He was brought in with his siblings, two pregnant adult females, and an adult male all in a bird cage together. They were STARVING. Literally. They belonged to a girl who never fed them except when her mom decided to bring up kitchen scraps. These little 7 week old rats were literally the size of my thumbnail, I wish I had photos.

Anyway, he was the last one left because he was just so darn difficult, so I took him home and got him neutered and he fell in love with my girl. They died within two weeks of each other last year I think...
