I’m pretty sure they don’t. What’s the rest of your rat’s skin like? Might be a skin condition?

No, its not normal. It could be an allergic reaction . What type of bedding are you using ?

 Rat Tail!!

im using carefresh! i dont think im doing anything wrong, ive read debbie’s website like a million times!! i did have to take them to the vet for ringworm, (which i got from my job and passed it to them before i knew i had it! i work at petsmart) and the vet gave me a sulfer bath that i had to use on them for 4 weeks so do you think that could be it? its been about 2 weeks since their last bath though!!

It sounds like it’s most likely ringworm then, since it will cause the skin to flake. Do you know how bad it is over the rest of the body? Keep treating, and maybe take them in for another vet check.

Yes, sulfur is very drying . As long as it is not red I would just watch it . They may just peel like from a sunburn then heal okay . In the mean time if it gets red I would put them on news paper or paper towels till its gone .Its not the idea substrate for rodents but it will not irritate the skin.
