I’ve been looking for the perfect pet for a long time. I’ve gotten a couple ,but their just not the ones for me. I mean I love them ,but there all chickens and fish. I need a good pet that I could do my homework with it just sitting there on my lap. I want a bunny ,but they get $.I want a mouse ,but I’m not sure. Any help would be good!

Well, compared to other pets, a rabbit isn’t particularly expensive. Assuming you get a medium-sized bunny, like a Holland Lop (smaller rabbits can be anti social and have more of a nasty temper as many people will tell you), the price list may look something like this:

ITEM COST Overall Startup Cost: $98-$128
Cage $50-$75
Food bowl $5
Water bottle $5
Bag of food (10 lbs) $10-$15
Chew sticks $2
Aspen bedding $10
Hay $6
Assorted toys $10
for stimulation
Rabbit (at a shelter) $20-$40

So, $100-$130 really isn’t that expensive. Depending how much your rabbit eats and poops, you’re looking to spend an additional $10-$15 a month for hay, food, and bedding.
When you consider the fact that ferrets or some reptiles cost well over $400 to start up, a rabbit really isn’t that expensive. Of course, you may have to make some sacrifices, but in the long run I love my bunnies and I think you would really be pleased with a bunny. And you may not even need a cage or bedding; if you litterbox train the rabbit, you could set up a child’s playpen, which run about $25-$60, and you set it on the carpet with a litterbox filled with shredded paper or cat litter, you’re good to go!!!!
A mouse may be cheaper, but they only live 1-3 years on average, and they aren’t usually the type of pet that will sit still in your lap for an hour while you do your homework. Have you considered a rat(s) as well?!?!?!
Good luck and I hope this helps,
-Peaches and Jeni

I don’t know any thing about rats, but my used to have rat and I would go over and see them every month and hold them and play with them. Do you know the prices on rat supplies and the food? That would be great if you told! Thanks for all the HELP!

Rats can be fairly expensive.
I have many, many rats... but I end up spending about fifteen dollars on them a week.
I guess if you only had two, it wouldn’t be so expensive.

I think rats are easier to keep than rabbits, though. I also think they make better pets from personal experience. But that seems to only be my opinion. xD

Guinea Pigs (at least from my experience from petsitting and visiting friends’ GPs) don’t really sit still for a long frame of time, and they usually seem more hyperactive to me.
Good luck,

I suggest rats. They are great pets. If you want one that will sit with you, go for males. You will need to (hopefully adopt) a pair or trio of males. Here are costs of my personal rats for an idea.
Starting prices
Martin’s Cage: $75 plus shipping (really good deal)
Food bowl: $5
Water bowl: $2
Rats: $20 each bred at shelter/pet store.
Prices of rats vary depending on where you get them. You should never get them from chain pet stores (ie: Petco Petsmart) where they buy them from bulk breeders. Always go to a local breeder.
Monthly price
Bedding: Carefresh $20 (every/every other month.) Spot cleaning and litter box training (a bit tough with intact males) means more time in between buying bedding.
Food: Homemade (based off Suebee’s rat diet) about $20 (lasts about two months buying bulk foods)
Link Homemade foods are the best choice with high quality lab blocks because they provide a good balance of fresh foods, are tasty, and is a good way to monitor exactly what is going into their bellies.
Toys: $5 at most including chew toys
Treats: Only fresh or greenies dog chews about $10. Veggies and other fun things. (Tofu (plain packaged), blueberries, small bits of whole grain bread, small bits of apple, carrots, romaine lettuce)

The costs are little if you do things right, and way worth it in the long run. Rats are awesome pets. Rabbits also make very good pets but I think it’s VERY important to choose your rabbit carefully. They all have different personalities and there is one that will suit you...you just gotta look for them ;)
Good luck with your new animal, whichever you choose.

i have a rabbit, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats, mice, birds, fish, and herps. (no snakes!) anyway, i CANNOT be without rats. i have spent up to 1300 on one rat though. make sure whatever you get money is put away for medical cost. even a mouse costs me 100+ to euthanize. my preferred pets for what you want are rats or mice. bunnies NORMALLY would not want to stay in your lap...a better option would be rats or super social mice. (only my male is super social.) i feed my rats a mix of harlan teklad 2014/2018 as the staple plus many other things. fruits, veggies, phoenix worms, salmon rolls, etc.

I’ve been thinking about this again and I deff think a ferret or a bunnies would be a good idea. Have you thought of Bearded Dragons? Older ones will hang out w/you.
Just thinkin

ferrets or bunnies will NOT normally sit on your lap. bunnies (90 or more % of the time) love petting, hate handling. and ferrets are happier running around crazily.

Yeah, ferrets usually like running around like crazy. But when they are young they will fall asleep on you also when they get older. I don’t think you can really get anything that will chill with you all day..

yeah a pair of rats or a social male mouse is probably best bet though of course they’d need food/water access. i have a ferret that i got at too young an age and coddled and the most he sits is 2-3 minutes. (which is a lot for a fuzzbutt.) so yeah, rats or mouse/mice. maybe a pair of guinea pigs.
