Looking for a small pet, and i need help.

i want a non expensive pet that can live in a 10 gal. tank, if it eats bugs only mealworms (my mom hates crickets), and my mom said no rodents because she thinks the cages will stink in the florida heat. any suggestions?

There’s not really a lot you can house in your aquarium.

Tanks, especially ones that can only hold ten gallons, aren’t really suitable for small animals. They offer poor ventilation.

Your mom doesn’t want rodents. Therefore your mom doesn’t want rats, hamsters, gerbils, or mice. That really just leaves you to choose from a rabbit or a Guinea Pig. These animals, however, can’t be housed in a ten gallon tank. That’d be cruel.

Rodents aren’t actually that smelly. Try telling your mother that. If their cages are kept cleaned and the animals themselves are cleaned, they shouldn’t smell that bad. I don’t get why she thinks a rabbit is going to smell better than a mouse or a hamster...

You might consider getting a Hermit Crab. They’re fairly easy to care for and I think a ten gallon tank would be acceptable housing for one.

I don’t think it had to be a mammal, am I correct? There are lots of reptiles and amphibians you can house in a ten gallon.

Reptiles:

Leopard gecko
Anole
House Gecko
And some other things

Amphibians:

A small tree frog
Pacman frog
Pixie frog
Fantasy frog
Salamanders
Small toads

You did mention bugs.

THIS IS IMPORTANT. If you can only feed mealworms, then you would have to get a leopard gecko. A leopard gecko is the only thing I know of that can stay perfectly healthy on a diet of mealworms. If you can convince your mom to use crickets, you can do anything I stated above.

i am looking more for a non-mammal pet but they will be considered, and i didn’t mention guinea pigs because I thought they were rodents, and obviously a rabbit can’t be housed in a 10 gal.

I don’t think any reptile can survive on a main diet of mealworms.

actually I happen to know that alot of people sustain their leopard geckos on only meal worm... I am one of those people... My guy has been with me since he was 2mo old and is a happy and healthy 8yr old gecko :)... as long as you give them their suppliments (calcium, some give vitamins as well)

however they are the only reptile I know of that can be raised on mealies alone... :)

yes my girls also do very well on mealwoms actually better than when they were on crickets

and mealworms are sooooo much easier(they dont get loose b/c they dont jump)

i dont know if it can only b a 10g b/c that is all you have room for or whatever but if you can get a 20g

you could get a crested gecko they dont reguire any insects at all(they eat a powdered diet you mix with water called crested gecko diet)

your mom might be even more enthused about them due that fact lol

good luck

i guess the cage doesn’t matter quite as much as long as it’s a small handle-able pet.

crested geckos are very handlable and they are soo cute b/c they hop around

and the largest tank you can afford and have room for is best for any animal

for hamsters you can use bin cages(or for geckos too) let me know if you have any questions on those they are soo cheep but i dont feel like writing everything down if you are not considering them lol

i am lazy lol

i guess my mom is only going to let me get a pet that doesn’t poop much, like a hermit crab.

At first I was thinking about getting a turtle but after reading this I’m thinking about the leopard gecko instead which apparently takes up less space... I’ll see I am in the process of buying some new furniture for my room and will try to make the most of it.
