 Safe and unsafe fresh foods?

I recently acquired 4 female rats from my sister. I know plenty about rats, but I would like a list of unsafe foods.

i’ve heard any kind of red meat it unsafe, but then I know someone who has rats that sometimes gives them pieces of beef. I’ve heard iceberg lettuce is bad, but then i’ve heard it’s okay. I like to give them fresh food(But I also have a mixture of lab blocks and seeds that I always have for them), so I’d like to know. The only food I know is unsafe are dairy products.

I don’t know if I’m allowed to do this, but this site is very helpful.

Iceberg lettuce isn’t necessarily bad for rats, it just doesn’t hold a high nutritional value (as said in the link given above.) I wouldn’t give beef, but it most likely won’t hurt if eaten. Hope this helps.

Almost any food that you eat is okay for rats . I would cook any meats and try not to feed any thing with salt or high sugar content . A good commercial rat food should be available at all times . You can give them treats of chicken ,and fresh rinsed veggies. Do not feed oats since it can swell in the stomach.I would not feed lentils either .

i dont like seasonings personally, so my rats get a little bit of whatever im making for dinner once a week,, plain spaghetti ( no sauce) is a favorite. i also supplement my seed/lab block diet with a high quality dog food, like BLue or Evo. its a nice change and source of protein as long as you make sure that your ratties arent being sneaky like mine, and hiding all the normal rat food and only eating the dog food so you think their bowl is empty and giving them more. my rats LOVE LOVE LOVE chicken or fish bones with a little meat on it, they also go crazy for bananas, yogurt covered raisins, super worms, melon peels ( with a little melon on it still of course) and strawberries, actually, any kind of berries drive them wild. as long as its in moderation, yoru rats can eat anything, even chocolate... but rarely. mine get half an m&M each per month. oh, and peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches:) and i have one rat who likes to kidnap mini marshmellows when ever i let him out. if i dont lock the cabinet, he runs into the kitchen and helps himself.

the rason why lettuce is bad for them is b/c it is mainly water and can cause runny stool

*goes to get special rat magazine!*

Absolutely no onions or potato eyes! This goes for dogs too. They have poisonous stuffs in them. Spinach and beet tops can cause urinary tract problems.

Chocolate, candy, and lettuce only occassionally. Chocolate and candy is bad for them (like humans!) so just occasional treats. Lettuce, as mentioned before, has a high water content and can cause runny stool. Always make sure you wash the veggies and fruits - they can have pesticides and chemicals on them.

In my experience, rats love cheerios, cheese, pasta, fruits, veggies, nuts, and sunflower seeds. Have fun with your ratties!
