UPDATE: baby mice + a mystery death Hi,
I wanted to update you guys all 6 baby mice are doing well... still not sure exactly which genders they are im 99% 2 are males but not sure on other 4 (I think they may be males too) 3 are white with red eyes like i thought and the other three arent lol...
mystery deaths
My dad checked on my mice this morning around 5am and the pair I had (not with babies) that was male/female were fine... I got home at around 7pm and checked on them and the male was pretty much nothing but a bit of fur and a spine (im guessing the female cleaned him up) and the female was having a ceizure in the corner of the cage (that thing they do when they die) and I have no idea why they died? I dont think it was old age because I have another female (the mom of the babies) is the same age as them and if they were getting close to "old" I dont think she would be breeding well? but I guess I could be wrong :(

UPDATE: baby mice + a mystery death Ive had feeder mice do that, soon after i got them from either a dirty cage, or if they had fleas and became anemic.
SO check if theres mites in bedding, plenty of water, clean bedding, no pine ect. Otherwise no idea

UPDATE: baby mice + a mystery death They both died the same day? Now that’s strange . Could they have eaten some thing poisonous? What was the temp. in the cage ? Had they been acting normally up until today ?

UPDATE: baby mice + a mystery death I just wanted to add that if the one had eaten some thing toxic then the other mouse ate him well that would poison both. Seizures can be caused from poisoning.

UPDATE: baby mice + a mystery death As far as I know they couldnt have gotten to anything poisoned... as I am the only one who cares for them... and the kids werent around in a time frame that would work to think they had put something in there.... I also am pretty sure they are free of fleas and stuff cause their bedding came from the same package as the other mice who are fine... but I wil ldefinately keep an eye out on the other mice for that... I have no idea what the temp in the cage was/is I dont usually keep track of that... but they are in the house with us so I am sure it was fine.. and as far as I could tell they were acting normal but I hadnt been home for a few days before this happened so it could have changed and my dad only checks on them every other day to make sure they have food etc and he wouldnt know what normal mouse behavior is :(

UPDATE: baby mice + a mystery death What type of cage were they in ? The reason I ask is even if they had a virus /respiratory infection it would be odd that they would both die the same day.Plus they would be sneezing and lethargic days before . Same thing if it was cancer or some thing else . If the cage got to hot then they could both die of heat exhaustion. It would take a heavy flea infestation to kill them. You would know it . If it was old age again they would not die on the same day.Watch the babies closely . I would get a digital thermometer and monitor the temp where the babies are . My bet is it was some thing that they ate or they got to hot .

UPDATE: baby mice + a mystery death the babies arent in the same cage as the ones who died.... they are in a totally seperate part of the room and in a different type of cage and everyone in there is doing wonderful.... the ones who died were in a plastic tub modified to be a cage with one big screen on top in the lid and another on the side where the water is attached (so i dont think it was a ventilation issue) and I cant imagine it being heat with all the vents and the fact they are in the coolest part of the house lol... but how hot would it have to get in the house for them to die of heat exhaustion?
