 Dumbo Goodness!

Hello everyone,

Picked up a masked dumbo today, a companion for current rat. He hasn’t been handled at all, so he’s a little skittish. But that’s ok. We’ll work with him.

Right now I have him in a wire cage next to Doinkers’s cage, so they can smell eachother. Anyone have any hints with introducing them? I plan on letting the new guy in Donkers’s cage (when he’s not in it, of course) and then introducing them in the bathtub or something similar...

Thanks in advance!

And I’ll have pics later.

idealy you should have quarenteened the new one for at least 30 days in a seperate room to make sure he is 100%healthy

then let them gradually get used to each other next the cages for at least a week and then try switching cages for a week then let them out for play time together in a neutral place and if all goes well after a few play sessions(3-4) then try housing them together

do it in the morning and make sure they you can be there all day to monitor their behavior

and you are sure your cage is big enough for 2 correct? how big is it?

good luck

I have the Rat Manor from Petco. It’s a pretty decent sized cage. Doinkers seems to like it.

With all the excitement I totally forgot about quarentine.. But I have put the cages in separate rooms now.

My sister-in-law got a rat from the same petstore, and I’m pretty sure it has a respitory infection. Scared me a little, so I went and got some antibiotics (the kind you mix with their water) just incase they started showing signs. If they do start getting sick, and the antibiotics don’t work. I WILL take them to the vet. No doubt.

As soon as my camera is done charging, I will get some pictures. :)

well the antibiotics you get that mix with the water dont really work

but if he has a respititory infection you will hear a clicking sound when he is breathing and he will be weezing and usually have runny eyes and nose

if he acts normal i doubt you have anything to worry about as far as a respiritory infection goes

alot of the time it has to do with the bedding he is being housed on

and i understand the excitment lol

good luck i hope they get along well

I’ve actually had really good success with those antibiotics in the past. And I think it’s a good idea to have them on hand just in case, even though he’s not showing any signs.

This is Panzor - Daddy got to name him.

He’s a real sweet little rat. He’s still very skittish. I’m just so comfortable with Doinkers, I’m not used to having to "be careful"... Ya know?

And ever since Mama got my finger last week, I’ve been shy around all my ratties.. And I try not to stick my fingers through the bars. Though Doinkers has never bit me, I’m still cautious now. And I don’t like it.

Also, before you house them in the same cage (after all the neutral area introductions and such) make sure and clean everything to get rid of all the rattie smells so they won’t be territorial. Congrats!

Well, I remembered the quarentine time too late. Both boys are sneezing. It started this morning. I noticed Panzor sneezing this morning so I got him started on the antibiotics. Then, I come home today and I hear Doinkers sneezing. So I got him started as well.

I put each cage in a different room last week. I wash my hands before each I touched either one.. I guess it just wasn’t enough... I’m pretty sure I got it early enough. But still...

This sucks.

Just wanted to share.
