 New Pics of Kitty!

Hi!Lets keep this post with no arguments please :) I know alot of people do not agree with me havening her but I do believe that I am giving her the best home possible.Raccoons are not for everybody!Alot of people could not handle the responsibility of having a coon. They take ALOT of responsibility and care and TIME.They take soo much time lol.You have to litterly raccoon proof your house.Alot of people think they want one and then when they actually get it,its cute at first but then it gets big and yet still very cute it gets into everything!!And terrorizes EVERY thing.I should take a pic of my snagged speaker cover.lol DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU GET ANY ANIMAL!!Talk to people that have them and see what it is like to own what you want!

Sorry about the poor pic quality,I had my camera set on low quality to take more pics and forgot to change it back didn’t notice it until I already put the pics in the computer.

She’s getting big . She looks healthy and happy .

Your right about them getting into every thing. They are also escape artists . Frequently when someone buys a raccoon then they get mean as they mature and become unmanageable . They frequently get loose, killed by dogs , get distemper, parvo or have to be put down because they want to mate and become mean. They also live up to 35 years so they are a long term commitment and often a costly one .A full grown raccon can kill a dog or cat and they have a mean bite . Wild babies also frequently carry rabbies with no out ward signs and they can not be vacinated for rabies .So never approch a wild raccon , even a cute baby. Call the Wild Life dummy. in your area .

I just read my post. I guess you can not abbreviate the word," Association" with out them changing it to" Dummy ". That’s funny .I meant to call the local Wild Life Associated or rehabilitating center in your area if you should find a baby coon on the road . Some times the mother gets killed by a car them the baby is left road side . But that would be in the early spring time .

I did not want anyone to take my post the wrong way. I am not attacking anyone or calling names . In fact Rosebud and I have became friends .

 New Pics of Kitty!

Thanks guys!I think she has grown ALOT too since the last pics were posted. She is getting soo big.Her attitude has not yet to change at all.She still loves to play everyday and goes back in her cage to sleep when she gets tired on her own.She sleeps at night and is very active with us during the day.She reminds me of a lil bear now lol.

I have not got her spayed yet but plan to do so soon.

Skullkeeper is right alot of pet raccoons do get mean, and turn on people when they become mature. But I have seem quite a few that are not mean and do not turn on people. It takes a lot of time and work to get them to stay tame and docile.I believe that with the attention she gets and the several hours a day that me and my family spend with her that I have a very good chance of her being a very good and rewarding pet.

There is always a IF though...IF she does turn on us than I have already talked with a wildlife rehabber and she is willing to take her and give her a forever home. She has agreed not to let her loose into the wild,as alot of people hunt coon here in Ohio and she would not be afraid of humans.

I really hope it does not come to this as me and my family really enjoy having her.She is really good with my kids, dogs and cats.Kitty and my dogs Snoopy and Lilly have all been raised together from babies.

No matter what I will always do what is best for Kitty.I just want her to be happy and right now I truely believe she is :)

Me and Skullkeeper have become friends and have agreed to disagree. She does not agree with me having her but she also knows I am taking the best possible care of her.She has gave me some good advice on what she fed her raccoons and what some of their favorite foods where.Kitty still does not care for fish too much. She will eat it but not like I thought she would. Before she would not even try it.

The main reason raccoons get mean or go back to their instinctive natural behaviors is because they become mature and need to mate . If they are not spayed/neutered I guarantee they will become unmanageable . If they are spayed/neutered then they may be less likely to become aggressive .

Have you tried the cray fish or crabs yet ? They like theses better than reg fish. They will also eat meal worms .

 New Pics of Kitty!

My husbands mom and dad had a couple raccoons that where not fixed and the only time they got grumpy(father in law said he would not say mean or aggressive because thats not how they acted)was when they wanted to mate in the beginning of spring, after a couple weeks they went right back to there normal behavior. Before my husband was born they had Erp and Squirt.(love the names lol)Then later on they got another one when my husband was about 12.He says that was the best pet he ever had!!Raki was his name. They also had all males.....Kitty is a female and will probably want to mate even more, witch is why she will DEFIANTLY get spayed.

There are more and more people breeding raccoons and selling them to just anybody.I feel so bad for them because I know more that half of them will not have a good life. Some will just get stuck in a cage and forgot about, some used for training hunting dogs, witch I think should be illegal.Me and my husband went to the coon dog trials.(he wanted another deer gun(don’t know crap abiut guns lol)anyways they had coons there that were about 6-8 weeks old selling them for 25$.I Think that should be illegal also. All them coons are gonna be is tortured and more than likely killed by the dogs they are traing it with.I really believe that is animal abuse.

Raccoons are a LOT of work.Kitty takes up alot of my time and my husbands!!BUT she is every bit worth it.I am very attached to her.She is so cute and makes me laugh all the time! She LOVES bath time.I put her in the bath tub and she jumps and splashes all around it is alot of fun to watch her.

Skullkeeper,I have not tried crab or cray fish yet,but I will I love to give her new things and watch her feel everything with her monkey feet lol.....I did give her a egg.WHAT A MESS!!Thanks alot Pam that was very nice out of you.Next time I will call you to come over so you can clean it up lol I am sure you really miss cleaning up all the messes lol.....

I use to live in the country and I would here people coon hunting at night . I would see the flash lights and hear the dogs . IT made me sick. I did not allow hunting on my property without my permission so I would have to run people off occasionally.

Yeah, they are messy eaters especially with raw eggs ,LOL.I would mix baby cereal, raw eggs and honey for my babies . Not only messy but sticky too !

 New Pics of Kitty!

Hey Rose Bud - she is getting soooo big. It has been a while since I have been on the forum. I still need to send pics of mine. I have gotten a female to add to my males since I was on last time. I ended up with this one just like the two boys - a rehabber that is a friend of mine got them at a young age and imprinted them so much that there is no chance of them turning back wild. I have got one of the males neutered and the other one and the female will go in with me this week and get done. The two males are 7 pounds and the female is about 12 pounds. I also have 2 wild ones that thankfully he gave to me so that I can raise them right and release them. Mine also love minnows and watermellon without the seeds. I have a pool for them and just put the minnows and other aquatic food and they LOVE going fishing for them. anyways, enough about my guys. Kitty is looking great and growing soo much. Have fun with her and enjoy her. Keep us updated with pics.

I hope you quarantined the two wild ones for at least 6 weeks .Be very care full with the wild ones . I would keep them separated from the others . They can be caring rabies , and you would never know it .They could also have distemper. Do you know what training they need in order to be released ? Do you know how to care for them prior to releasing them? It is very different than if you want a pet . Have you ever re-released raccoons before ? It is illegal in many states . I know it is in Ohio .

we used to have racoons we would get them and when they got big we’d let them go. when they got big wed move them to a big outside cage and tried to make it natural. wed put crawfish in there water some time. then we’d let them go, and some times we would find them in the barn eating cat food. one of them even had babies and brought them back!

They will come back to the people that raised them and to where they know that there is food . Before releasing a wild animal they need to be taught how to find and catch their own food . They also need to learn fear of humans and other animals like dogs . If they have been raised with people as pets and around dogs then when they are released they will not be afraid and will end up either killed by a dog or go up to people and possible bite some one.
Its very similar to the black bears out west . If people feed them, they soon lose their fear of humans . Then they expect to be feed .
To release a raccoon it can take months of training and reconditioning them.

Skullkeeper I know that you don’t know my history with wildlife but I have been a wildlife rehabilitator for about 14 years. I have rehabilitated many animals and safely released them back in to the wild. A matter of fact I work with the game wardens in my area and some of the animals I have released have tags and collars on so that they can track some of them and gather info and the ones so far are doing well. I just got through releasing 2 coons and 12 squirrels this past weekend. I appreciate you wanting to share your info with me but I am good thanks. These three coons I have now have been properly quarentined and vaccinated for everything as well as gone through courses of dewormings and also have been spayed and neutered. These are non releasable coons and no matter what is done they are not releasable. They have been with humans too long. Believe me I know the best thing for them is to be back in the wild but since that is not possible all I can do is make their living conditions as close to wild as possible.
