 Skinny Rat?

After taking my rats to the vet (Panzor has pneumonia, but we caught Doinkers in time) I washed their cages and accessories, and gave them a nice oatmeal bath. Panzor seems to be a little skinny to me. My mom came by (yes, I still call my mom for everything) and said he looked and felt (she squeezed him...haha) fine and I shouldn’t be too worried and it might be because he’s not feeling too hot.

But since he’s not feeling too hot, I don’t want him to lose weight because losing weight is bad! Right? I’ve been feeding both of them a little bit of turkey in the mornings and cherrios and (plain icky cah cah) yogurt mushed up into a yucky chunky goo. I think it’s an interesting breakfast choice, but they seem to love it.

Am I overreacting? Should I be doing something different?

your rat is adoable!!!! and to answer your questions, YES loosing weight is a bad thing... however you might start weighing them that way you can tell if he is loosing weight and if he continues to do so then I would worry... but if he seems fine otherwise (eats, drinks and acts normally etc) I wouldnt worry too much about it :) GL!

Panzor seems to be filling out a little more. And boy, he’s a sweetie. He’s such a cuddler, and he’s lazier that snot. He’s still very active, but he likes to just sit. And it’s a little strange because Doinkers is on crack or something.

Now, I have another couple of questions. Panzor seems to drinks about twice as much as Doinkers. Is this something I should be concerned about?

And he pees a lot. And not like, in big spots... But like.. He drizzles ALL over... And when I pick him up, his underside is moist. Doinkers can go awhile without peeing, at least half an hour. Is it just a difference between them, or is something wrong with him? I didn’t say anything to the vet because I hadn’t noticed it yet...

sometimes boys mark. but with most animals excessive drinking and urination may have diabetes. also stop the turkey. give baby food. he is a male and too much protein may be the reason for the excessive urination and could very well lead to kidney disease. you could use soy baby formula if he is losing weight and i feed my rats 1.5 teaspoons of baby food daily. of course nothing with oranges if male.

Would the vet check for diabetes? Because the vet didn’t say anything about that. Same with the kidney disease... I guess I’ll just have to take him to the vet again.

That seems like a lot of baby food? And why no oranges?

And it’s not like he’s constantly peeing. It’s just when Doinkers pees on me, he’ll like pee a little, move, pee some more, move.. And with Panzor, you can’t even tell he peed until you feel, ya know? It’s a light drizzle...And it’s only when he runs around on me, or the couch, or the floor. It just strikes me as odd. If I put him in my hood, though, he doesn’t pee....

I don’t know.. Just the whole respiratory infection scared me...

Oh yeah, PacificNW Rat Show tomorrow! And I’m going! Woot!

oranges lead to kidney disease and cancer. same thing with too much protein. it’s really not that much baby food it just sounds like it is. diabetes and kidney disease can be checked through the blood. but even if he doesn’t have it, calm down with the turkey. he can’t have that much protein daily. what you are explaining sounds just like marking. the pee or mark you’re describing is probably nothing. but again i’d switch to baby food or extra veggies. too much protein’ll also make him poop less and can lead to constipation.
