grooming you, not completely freaking when you pick him up, bruxing, boggling, sleeping/resting on you, things like that.

cool, my new rat licks me and he always gets into my hands when i cup it. And he doesnt poop when i get him out of his cage. i always thought that when they brux its because they are mad. what is boggling? and i think my rat is playing with me. because when i try to wrestle with him he spins around and nibbles on my hand. im going to try and start training. but he wont take food out of his cage yet. i dunno why. i think the out side excites him to much to eat.what do you think?

Boggling is when ratties get so excited their eyes start to pop out of their heads lol you’ll see the blue part around the eyes. It’s a wonderful thing really. You can almost see a smile too hehe. They’ll usually do it when they’re playing with you or have a treat they REALLY love. Mine didn’t start eating food out of the cage for awhile. Usually because they’re too busy. If they have a place to run and ’stash’ it they’ll usually eat it then. Patch’s place is behind the couch. He puts his crickets back there...ugh...horrible to clean up lol.

yeah. normally they get too excited to eat try to give them stuff they can’t stash. like a bit of yogurt or baby food. they’ll love it. if yours wrestles with you, he’ll probably play chase. like scratch the bed/floor and move it around, he’ll follow it in circles or whatever and usually it ends up with me letting them catch me, them feeling special and marking and nibbling/grooming me. sounds like your guy trusts you a lot. with rats that haven’t been messed up by previous owners, as long as you are patient and good to him, building trust is relatively easy. good luck. oh and is he a single rat? if so, he’d be MUCH easier to introduce to a friend at a young age.

 Rat trust?

Yeah, i dunno why this one seems to trust me. I got him from a privite owned pet store. Well it was acually my friend that got him for his monitor. Him and his brother was takin. But only his brother went. i wanted to keep the other little guy for a pet because he would run into my hands. So right how i guess im his only friend. I spend around 2 hours with him and usually visit his house when i pass buy the hall way. I want to get him a buddy. but he’s alot smaller than the ones at the petco. I dont want those guys tho. They seem to sneeze alot.

yeah the reason i say to get one now while he’s young is introductions have to be done after quarantining the new guy for at least 3 weeks. uhm and yeah petco tends to overcrowd their rats. too many rats in a glass tank are almost guaranteed to be sick. anyway uhm. maybe look into a rescue or shelter that might’ve had a mom give birth recently? or a breeder.

yeah, i know someone who is expecting rat pups. And oh when ever i put him down he always poops . like everywhere. What does this mean? he doesnt do this when he/s sitting on me. Also, how do i get him to come to me? Because when ever i set him down in the living room i dont want him to run off so far.

you can do trust training.
trust training
it’s good to teach them their names, and then they can come when called. mine don’t know their names but know nicknames since i use nicknames more than their real names. he could just need to poop and the fact that he doesn’t poop on you shows that he is safe with you and likes you a lot. if the poops are wet they might be nervous poops if he is somewhere he doesn’t know. until he is trained i suggest getting a folding table or pen and using that as his play/learning environment or your bed if you don’t mind marking and poops. what i do is let them on the bed sometimes and i have a "waterproof cover" like for a bedwetter and put it over my sheet so they can pee on that. put a few tunnels, toys, and houses down and whatever you want and it makes a great play area.

Oh yeah! i think it’ll be a good idea to teach em there name first thing! How do you do that? Just call them? and when ever it comes to you give it a treat? and i think he’s just scared when i set him down. He still wont eat out side of his cage so i have to work on that. Im giving him treats inside for now to get him use to things. i feel silly taking to a rat because he doesnt wag its tail or anything lol.

when he starts to take treats give him cheerios or wheat pasta. small things or yogurt/baby food. it might take a while but they can learn quite a few words/sayings. mine know "frutas" to mean baby food. and they know the word no. rats express themselves VERY well with their eyes and faces. he’ll get used to his name. start him off with a small play area and a lot of hide spots. as he calms, increase his play area.

Lol, that first rat is really cool. Especially when i got him his wire cage, because he’s really good at sprinting to the top and getting on his igloo. Hopefully her new friend wont be a bad influence. haha

heh. i know the feeling. my newest rescue ferret is showing bad habits to my others. it should be fine though. if it’s a big cage, maybe more than one pan. like one on every other level? at least ’til the new one learns.
