 Where to look?

Well, I know where I look for rats. Not sure if it’s the same. I always look in dark places. Where ever it’s dark, there could be a rodent. I also try and find areas that are soft and comfortable. I’ve found my rats in dresser drawers with clothes in them more than once. Also, for the safety of the rodent, I look in places where there are wires to make sure they don’t chew on them and get shocked. If I’m unable to find them I say too bad and set out some food and water, and look everywhere again the next day.

I’m sorry. =( It doesn’t sound like he’ll make it. You can try taking him to the vet, but I’m not sure if they can do anything.

aww that’s sad. is he adjusting to it? like sometimes blind animals get more nippy so it’s good to let him know your near before touching him. or is he just calm about it? best wishes for him.

Well, at least he didn’t die. It’s too bad that he’s blind, but I kind of doubt it was from the escape. If he old?

give him...hmm. oatmeal (not instant) or sugar free cheerios. toasted wheat bread. things like that. not too much or he may get constipated. you could also offer ensure, pediasure, or soy baby formula in a dish.

instant is the minute to cook one. the one to offer is the quaker/store brand like stove top "old fashioned oats" one. like this one.

maybe the shock of everything? maybe they hurt? many things. if you offer bread, wheat is preferred and toast it. it can choke them if it’s normal because it’s soft and chewy. use a warm wet cloth/paper towel as a compress on his eyes when they crust. poor guy. hopefully he’ll continue improving.

alright. and again i say wheat is preferred but when i was younger i gave mine white toast. i don’t think it’s "bad" per se, just not as good. but definitely at least lightly toast it to a nice lightly crunchy texture. it’s good that he was found. keep us updated. good thoughts to the little guy.

an abscess would be a wound so you would see little to no fur and most likely an indentation on it or a cut. if that is not present it is most likely a tumor or cyst. sadly tumors can be common in "senior" hamsters. if he’s older (and it isn’t an abscess which can easily be drained), i’d say keep him comfy until his quality of life goes down. since his body just had all this stress even if a surgery was an option financially, he’d probably be unable to withstand it. just keep loving on him and see how it progresses. again, if it’s an abscess, it’ll be easy to tell.

okay, so all that time he was probably dehydrated. dehydration will make him skinny, weak, his eyes crust over from lack of tears and almost everything you’re describing. pedialyte would be best for that. i know with squirrels it’s not good to feed them unless they are fully hydrated so you might take that into consideration. also if it happens again your vet can administer fluids sub q which is under the skin and give him a dextrose solution and maybe even antibiotics if there’s any infection from anything. never underestimate the knowledge of your vet and being able to save your pet. after the fluids and dextrose he will perk up immediately and probably for good. if you’ve ever seen a hamster with wet tail then you will know that all these symptoms match. it’s all because of dehydration. a dog with parvo doesn’t die from the virus, it dies from dehydration. hydration is key for good health!!!!!

alright. if you read this before you go, you can get the singles or the freeze pops. if you get the regular container, make ice cubes and then wrap the tray in something to keep it clean, because once you open pedialyte it is only good for 48 hours i believe it is. i get the freeze pops because it’s easy to keep unfrozen and smaller amounts, also ’cause i like to eat them when i get heat exhaustion. good luck.

cvs, supermarket, etc. they’re usually in the baby food area. i use the generic store brand. it’s the same thing. you could also use powerade zero (not regular powerade) as gatorade and powerade have too much sugar, but powerade zero is sugar free, readily accepted, and cheap. that you may find at your deli but a supermarket is more likely.

either is great to have available because even if not dehydrated, if it’s a super hot day and i can’t be home to check often (even though they have their own a/c hehe.) i fill a smaller bottle with half water and half pedialyte or powerade zero and show them the bottle so they know where it is and i can go out knowing it isn’t an issue since they readily accept the taste.
