 Adopting Chinchillas.

So ive been taking in tons of adoptee’s from our local petco and they said that they will be getting in a male and a female chinchilla that will go up for adoption. I already told them id take both of them.

Info and tips about these guys will be appreciated.

well if they are together they need to be seperated and if you want to keep them together male will need to be neautered

expect babies gestation usually lasts around 110 days and you will need a baby proof cage as babies can fit through almost anything holes should be no more than 1/4 in

they need dust baths a few times a week with good quality dust (blue cloud and blue sparkle are the best ones)

feed timothy hay and an all pellet diet like oxbow, mazuri, tradition

no fresh foods they have very sensitive tummies best "treats" for them are rose hips, shredded wheats, raisins on a rare occasion

they need to be kept cool never above 75 in the room and normal temps ahould never really be above 70

chins-n-hedgies.com is a great forum for care

let me know if you have any questions

good luck

 Adopting Chinchillas.

I got scolded one time on this stupid forum not to have babies with pet quality chinchillas. So depends what you want to do really. I went to a vet they told me it is a bunch of bull.

 Adopting Chinchillas.

Well we havent heard anything else about them but we are going to go ask probly tomorrow.
They will be in their own cages, or in a large seperated one.
Ive been doing my research so but the time they get here hopefuly ill be ready :]

Im sure eventualy, after weve had them atleast a year, we will consider breeding them. The one guy said that she had babies not too long ago and all of them were healthy and sold fast.

thanks guys.

it is very irresponsible to breed pet quality chinchillas alot of them have fur problems and all kinds of stuff

plus just b/c they looked healthy doesnt mean they were on the outside you have no idea on their background or genetic history

plus you have to have speciale cages for moms with babies and a whole number of things can go wrong with the pregnancy

i dont see the need to fill the world with more chinchillas when there are already so many in rescues

and a seperated cage might not be enough they will mate through the bars if they can reach each other it is reccomended that the cages be a foot apart

anyway i would get the male or female fixed and that way they can still live together but live happier and longer lives
