 Rat Bedding

Sorry for asking so many questions but i just want my rat to be very happy and comfortable when i get it.Okay i’ve looked around on websites they said its okay to use old t shirts and towels for its bedding i was liking that idea so my rat could be nice and comfy, and i was wondering if it is safe and is it a good idea?

Thank you

Towels and old t shirts make great bedding. It would be best if you try to litter train your rat though. That way they would pee on the shirts and only poop in the box. You would have to change the towels alot less often. Keep in mind that male rats don’t litter train very well. To litter train them, take some poop and dirty bedding, then put it in the litter box over the new bedding. They will get the idea that this place is where to go. Whenever you see poop outside of the box, put it in the box so they learn not to go on the towels. Carefresh is great for litter boxes. Some rats are allergic to carefresh though, so watch for sneezing. If you have any more questions, fire away.

Dont buy any rat food, it contains corn that can cause mold in its lungs and kill the rat. make your own like this.
1/2 cup lentals
1/2 cup (not quick) oat meal
1 cup mixed fruit
1/2 cup small dog biscuits (milkbone) broken in half
1/4 cup peanuts or other nuts
and 1 cup ABC dried pasta(or some other small dried pasta like shells or bows)
mix it all in a bowl and put in a ziplock bag. feed daily and replace as needed. it may seem alot but it is for the welfare of your pet. i did this method with my rat and she lived to be 5 almost 6 years old. sad story is i tryed buying pre made food like kaytee when i was unknowledgable, and my first two female rats barley live a year on the stuff. all my mice and rats have lived twice-three times as long if you feed this. i know what im saying cause i have 11 mice and a rat right now so im set with this diet. :)
