Mazuri rat blocks are good. Any brand rat block is halfway decent unless it says its for rat/hamster. Hamsters have completely different diet requirements than rats so don’t buy that kind. Some people feed low fat low protein dog food as well. I like to mix blocks with dog food for some variety. Rat blocks are kind of like vegetables are to most kids...boring. Mine always eat the blocks last, but they love dog food lol. Make sure they get healthy treats for variety. Anything thats healthy for you is healthy for your rats. Mine love broccoli and carrots. I’ve been told not to feed oranges to male rats, and keep chocolate in moderation. One m&m is ok every once and a while. Chocolate is not toxic to rats like it is to dogs. High sugar sweets in general aren’t great for them though. They make good occasional treats. Rats have a huge sweet tooth. From all your posts it sounds like your rat will be spoiled to death =). Oh and another thing, if your only getting one rat make sure to pay ALOT of attention to it. Like four hours a day or more. Rats are very social and get lonely easily. If you can’t spend alot of time with it, then you should get it a buddy thats the same age/size. Good luck with everything. I’d like to see some pictures when you get one.

Dont buy any rat food, it contains corn that can cause mold in its lungs and kill the rat. make your own like this.
1/2 cup lentals
1/2 cup (not quick) oat meal
1 cup mixed fruit
1/2 cup small dog biscuits (milkbone) broken in half
1/4 cup peanuts or other nuts
and 1 cup ABC dried pasta(or some other small dried pasta like shells or bows)
mix it all in a bowl and put in a ziplock bag. feed daily and replace as needed. it may seem alot but it is for the welfare of your pet. i did this method with my rat and she lived to be 5 almost 6 years old. sad story is i tryed buying pre made food like kaytee when i was unknowledgable, and my first two female rats barley live a year on the stuff. all my mice and rats have lived twice-three times as long if you feed this. i know what im saying cause i have 11 mice and a rat right now so im set with this diet. :)

This is only true for dried corn kernels like the ones in hamster mixes. It is not true about rat blocks. So obviously do not feed your rat any mixed food. Blocks are fine. There is no corn in the brand I use as well.
