 Albino vs. PEW - Rat business

I’ve read so many different things on the internet - but I would like to get some experienced rat people’s opinions.

Is there a difference between the albino rat and the PEW rat? I’ve read yes, and no. Physically they’re the same, but genetically they’re different. I just don’t know what to believe.

The reason I’m asking - is I would like to breed my albino male. I have about 7 people lined up right now that "missed out" on my last litter. And if all of them get "pairs" which I highly recommend, that’s 14 babies. 3 people even gave me deposits - weird? Yeah..

But I know they don’t want albino babies - so I don’t want to breed a rat for no reason. Too hard on Mama, and nothing good can come out of it. Just not worth it.

I know the petstore my Doinkers came from - and all his sisters and brothers were albino or B&W hooded. If that means anything...

PEW is a term that albinos and PEW non albinos both fall under. PEW is normally a term for a rat with pink eyes and white fur but some color fault that makes it non-albino. (i.e a small patch of brown or cream fur) But many people call albinos PEWs because they don’t know the difference or just because they want to. I know confusing, right? But yes there is a genetic difference. A solid white rat with a completely light tail(no natural black coloring on it) is albino. If there are any other colors on it then it is not albino and it may be called a PEW. I hope this helps.

Ahh. Makes a little more sense. I guess? Haha.

Sooo.. My boy is yellowish white with bright pink eyes. So he’s just albino, right? Not a show quality - but just an albino.

The picture has some weird lighting but your rat looks pure white. A cream colored rat with pink eyes is called champagne. Cream is a good deal darker than white so it’s not too hard to tell the difference. From the picture your rat looks like an albino to me. Very cute. I have a strange weakness for albinos PEWs whatever you wanna call em lol.
