some like pairs and others like to be by themselves. mine are all by them selves. NEVER put two males together if you do want two rats. however rats do not live that long. 2-3 years is the max and they do get tumors well not all do. i have a rat right now that has a tumor and i have to put her to sleep ): but other than that they are awesome pets.

You are thinking of mice. Two male rats can get along perfectly. Occasionally thought you can get an aggressive male rat who hates other males. That’s pretty rare though. Male mice on the other hand will fight to the death if housed together almost immediately. Mice are smelly, only live about a year and aren’t very bright. They poop everywhere. They can’t hold their bladders at all. Rats can be litter trained and can hold it for a few hours. Rats make much better pets than mice but they need a lot of human attention and a large cage. Mice are easier and cheaper but not as rewarding in my opinion. Rats can be cuddly and affectionate while most mice are jumpy and flighty.

 Mice advice?

I’ve had about 30 rats and I only had that problem once. The aggressive one did not kill his cage mate though he just beat him up from time to time. Sometimes rats will kill another one if it is sick. If it’s cage mate dies on its own, the other rat may eat their remains so it appears that they killed it. I’ve also heard that rats will kill each other if their cage is too small. Most of the time males get along just fine with a few little fights every once in a while. There shouldn’t be any blood though. But back on topic two female rats will almost never fight and don’t really smell. Female mice are much smellier than female rats. Mice are very cute and entertaining to watch though. It depends if you want a companion animal like a dog (rat) or if you want a cute active pet (mouse) that’s a lot like a hamster.

wow thank you! You’ve helped a lot.. I already have lizards that arent exactly companion animals(i cant really hold them) so i would like a companion. I love dogs but dont have room for one and some say that rats are like dogs.
