Scabs on rats They could be from a few things. You should check him for mites. Comb through his fur and look for little bugs. They are pretty easy to spot. If he has mites then he is biting skin to relieve the itch and that’s what causes the scabs. Mites are very hard to get rid of. You can treat him by giving him a tiny amount of ivermectin. It is a horse wormer. You could call up a vet for advice on how to use it. I’m not a vet so I’d hate to tell you a wrong dose or something. If he has a cage mate they may be grooming him too hard. If your rat also has some patches of hair missing it is probably the grooming thing. Another thing is allergies and dry skin. Some rats have naturally dry skin like people and get little scabs from itching at it. I have a rat with dry skin problems and I condition his fur with baby conditioner to moisturize his skin whenever he gets a bath. Or your rat may be allergic to it’s bedding. I would first look for mites, then switch the substrate, then condition his fur, then separate him for a while to find out what the problem could be. If they weren’t from some sort of injury, and they look like tiny red dots that don’t move when you touch them it is most likely dry skin like mine has.
