I’m getting my first rat! Put them in a room with high people traffic and give them a lot of attention. Rats love human attention and getting out of their cage. Rats can only hold their poo for about an hour. Sometimes two or three. So if your rats is playing in your house and is not litter trained, you need to put it back in its cage every hour or two to avoid accidents. If your rat is litter trained you can leave a box out for them. Litter training is simple. Get a Tupperware container or ferret litter pan and fill it with dirty bedding and poop. (Make sure you clean the cage before putting in the litter box.) The rat will then realize that’s where it should be going. If your rats start using the box after first time you can clean the box and put in clean bedding. If they don’t seem to get it, keep using dirty bedding until they do. Male rats aren’t as easy to litter train as females are. They have more accidents and pee wherever they want. Most rats don’t have the ability to hold in their pee very well so make sure wherever you let them play is washable. Rats love to play outside as well. One cool thing about rats is that they are territorial so if you lose your rat, odds are its in its favorite hiding place. For whatever reason do not wear gloves while handling them. A lot of rats think that gloves are scary monsters and will chomp down as hard as they can on them. Rats are very easy to care for so that’s about it. Have fun with them!
