i would suggest you take the time to properly take care of your iguana. they are a lot of work and money as it is especially if you are younger and don’t have the money to properly take care of it. it should be enough work for you if you’re giving it the proper attention.

i hope you have the money to give it a proper cage when it’s 6 feet long and needs a custom built cage. and i hope it has proper UVB lighting. if you properly care for an iguana it isn’t "quite easy" they can get extremely aggressive if not handled correctly. as for tricking your parents, obviously if that’s what you think you have to do, you aren’t ready for one. that’s not a mature thing to do.

Well this would be the only suggestion I would have for you, I have several snakes myself and I also have 2 boys 18-19 years old, My boys get anything and everything they want, BUT!!! They also have to show me they are responsible, Show your mom how well you take care of the iguana, get a part time job if you have to, do extra things around the house, keep your grades up, and trust me, your getting this advise from a mom!!! try this and I bet ya, she lets you have the snake, It worked with me and my boys.... Give it a try

tricking them isn’t the key. you do know that the iguana may live for 20+ years right. are you going to be able to keep him when you go to college. if anything a snake would have been a better choice in the beginning because they are easier to care for. tricking your parents though isn’t going to show you are responsible and are going to care for them properly. i asked you before about your knowledge for the iguana and i don’t know if you cussed me out or what because the response was removed. i simply wanted to see what your knowledge is. i take in rescues and have seen too many iguanas that have been neglected because the owners didn’t have enough knowledge about them. i’m not trying to be rude to you. i just think that you need to make sure you know the full extent of what you are getting into with the iguana before you get something else. i have one of my own and they are not cheap easy animals. i just spent 400 dollars on a surgery for her. your best bet is that if they don’t want you to have it then wait until you move out of the house and get what you want then. that’s what i had to do.

My son wanted a snake and he WORKED for it. He worked at a local Breeder of Ball Pythons until he had enough store credit to get his corn, the tank and all the needed accessories to outfit the enclosure properly! And in during the process he learned how to take care of snakes from a Professional!!! If my son had tried to trick me into letting him get a snake He’d have been back at the store as fast as I could drive him!!!

We now have 6 snakes and Matt is extremely responsible and knowledgeable with them. ^5 to my son as well.

SnakeKeeper,

I wasn’t addressing my comments to you or to anyone who takes care of their animals. Just this one person who is actin like a spoiled child who can’t get her own way. :-) Tricking your parents isn’t a good thing to do. Your mom Hates snakes, and unfortunately there probably isn’t much you can do at the moment. The way I understand what you wrote, is that You dad has a bunch of snakes and you only have one. If that’s true then maybe your mom is overwhelmed by all the snakes.

LOL I had to laugh at your comment about hamsters being snake food. I personally don’t care for them as pets either.

However, the best advice I can offer is for you to wait, take good care of your current snake, and love him for who he is.

I’ve helped several other young people convince their parents to let them get snakes but those parents were never totally against snakes just very uncertain about having one as a pet.

My personal suggestion is to be the best owner that you can be, learn as much as you can, and don’t be a pest about getting another snake. The more you bug em, the more they’re going to put their feet down and say "no" Learn as much as you can about what kind of snake you want, respect your mom’s fears, and hope for the best when you do ask for another snake.

Worst case you may have to wait until you can afford to move out on your own to be able to add another snake. Patience is not easy especially when your young but unfortunately I think thats what you’re going to have to practice. :-(

On a personal note. Congratulations on being a responsible pet owner!! I truly and honestly wish that more people took better care of the pets that depend on them for everything. Keep up the good work I know you’ll get another snake and that you’ll be a good owner.

unfortunately that’s the way it is sometimes. my mother is deathly afraid of snakes. i had to wait until i moved out to get one. as much as you may hate it sometimes that’s just the way it is. if you are responsible then you are the better person for it. if you can’t get a snake snakekeeper, maybe you can think of another pet that’d you’d love to have. research it and make sure you know everything you can about it. maybe even though you can’t get a snake you can spend your time enjoying and taking care of something else.

Okay so I’m getting there’s a bunch of kids all wanting more pets... don’t you guys go to school? That alone should be your top priority. And If you’re going to school for 8 hours a day, then getting a part time job that’s not leaving you with much time for your pets. Now granted, there are SOME that can handle school, work, friends, and pets however most don’t/can’t/won’t stay at home to hold a snake rather then go out with friends. Granted it’s great that you want pets, I myself have quite a few... but I also only work about 12 hours a week, do not go to school, and basically most of my friends are going to college now so they’re not available during the week.. So basically I’m a hermit that sits at home. (in my own defense I don’t choose to work only 12 hours a week but health reasons say that’s the max)... I guess I kinda lost my train of thought but the point i was making is how many of these animals are being neglected? When i had my iguana, he was NOT in any way shape or form easy to take care of, cheap for that matter... when i went to college, umm yeah ramen, mac n cheese, and kool-aid were all i had in my cupboards, i had a bunch of nasty veggies in my fridge that cost like 20x as much.. the rest of my cash went for the electric bill and rent... so i’m kinda wondering how well that poor lizard is going to be treated later on down the road?

Good God...could you be more bombarded with feedback?????

Look Iggies are a complete PITA (pain in the a**....butt). They don’t just need UVB, they need UVA/B, a balanced diet, four time per year veterinary attention, potential vaccinations, vitamin/mineral supplementation, air circulation and human inter-action. AKA...They ain’t easy unless you’re willing to sacrifice.

If you want to persuade your mom, investigate a ball python. Yeah, most people say "OMG a python", but it isn’t like that. They are non-aggressive, more prone to rolling into a ball (hence the "ball" portion of the ball python) and don’t readily tag anyone. They grow to 6-feet and are relatively relaxed. My son has handled mine since age-4 and it hasn’t tagged either of us, hungry or not.

FYI-----Everyone views the garter snake as a benign/safe pet. However, people don’t realize that garters are poisonous.....they just lack the fangs necessary to envenomate. Scientists can’t tell whether they’re on their way towards or away from being poisonous. Either way, currently, they’re relatively non-venomous/harmless.

It’s a matter of perspective. Oooh, garter snakes are "safe"....NOT!!!!! Ball Pythons are "dangerous".....NOT!!!!! Do your research and go from there.

Exactly why she doesn’t want you to get one. By going against her will and not respecting her authority, it tells her that you are irresponsible and are thinking more about actually getting the animal than towards the animal’s health and well being. By doing that, you were potentially endangering the animal by bringing it into an environment where it wasn’t wanted (except by you) and where it would unexpectedly show up. ---Not a good idea/situation. You’ll have to prove to her that you truly are responsible and express your sincerest apologies for what you did. Honestly though, if you bought an animal without your parent’s consent and knowledge and then are trying to trick them into letting you get a snake, I don’t know if you’re ready for a reptile. They are a huge responsibility!!
