So I met this spider in the shower...

She’s clearly a Black Widow and likes moths...can I keep her? Please? I don’t know why but I just slipped her into a mason jar, added a moth that was flying by, tossed in a water soaked ball of thread and named her Mollie. I’ll be careful I promise, but it’s not like I have any idea what I’m doing. How often should I feed her? The moth battle was epic and took four hours. Mollie sucked on it for two days before cutting it loose to the bottom of her jar. How often does she need one of those? Does she just live on water drops an’ moths? Anything else? Should I make her a bigger home? How can I tell if she’s happy?

Nyarlathotep is my co-pilot,

Tommy2Hats

Well, you should never keep a potentially dangerous animal. Black widows can store sperm for along time, and lay egg sacks when food becomes available. i would advise getting rid of it, but if that is not an option feed it an adult cricket about once or twice a week. Genly mist it’s web occasionally to prevent it’s enclosure from getting to dry, but i am pretty sure that they get their moisture from prey. the jar is big enough, but if you decide to get a bigger one make sure it is escape proof. Above all, BE CAREFUL! Black widow bites may not kill you, but they hurt so much they will make you wish they did.

dont mist the jar spiders dont like it wet. the wet ball is fine for moisture and keep it on some soil and feed it every couple of weeks with a couple of crickets. also check the rules on keeping a black widow as a pet.

there are no "rules" on keeping black widows, no one cares. Anyway, spiders may not like it wet, but they do need some humidity to shed properly.
