 Something Ive gotta do.....need advice!

Ok, So heres the deal lol! I successfully conquered my fear of snakes years ago and now I own 10 of them. 9 RTB and 1 eastern hognose. I have an insane fear of spiders (I know, not uncommon) but I am ready to conquer this fear as well! What I would like to know is what is the best tarantula to start out with that is easily handled and easy to care for? Although they are scary to me, I still find several of them quite beautiful! Any and all helpful info is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Good luck overcoming your fears :) For me to overcome mine I would have to like.. breed dubia roaches or get a few hissing roaches.. that is SO not happening lol

I’ve had good experiences with keeping and handling these species:

Avicularia avicularia
Avicularia versicolor
Aphonopelma baergi (wild caught)

Tarantulas can move surprisingly fast, so it’s important not to accidently breathe on them or jerk your hand so they don’t get startled.

Other species recommended for beginners are:

Grammostola rosea
Grammostola pulchra
Aphonopelma bicoloratum (Although this one can be expensive and hard to find)

Just do some looking online and you’re sure to find the perfect one!

After your question I did a bit more ressearch and you should definately check out the avic. versicolor! Its just beautiful. In fact I think im going to get one lol.
That and the brazillian black wich just has a nice fuzzy coat!

Only word against avicularia genus is be watchful of slings, they are prone to SADS(sudden avic death syndrome) so buy one who is around the 2" mark. Also one other good one ETM missed is G.pulchripes the Chaco golden knee., big beautiful softies :)

thanks! I appreciate all the help! :) Does anyone know a reputable breeder that has a website I can look at? I havent found anyone in my area (mississippi) There is a reptile show in Baton Rouge in March though.......maybe look there too?

Check out Kelly Swifts website www.swiftinverts.com or Ken Macneil’s site www.kenthebugguy.com also Paul Becker’s site www.petcenterusa.net three of the absolute best people in the hobby to buy from. Also if you go on kingsnake.com under the spider classifieds and look for a post by Sam Floyd, I bought a few Avicularia sp. Peru Purples from him and they are great.

Rather then saying "pick me, pick me", try this, check each website, check the prices of each species your looking for on each site. Prices are different on each page for the most part.
