 Yummy Feeding Time!

Hey guyz,

I was just wondering from the time Tegus are young until the time they are older should i moderate the amount that they can eat? Or do i fill them up until they dont eat anymore? Because my teacher and i got into a debate about this...i said fill-em up, he sayd i think 1 pinkie every other day for his length atm...i would say hes about 8 inches snout to vent. Just wanta know cuz if it dies of starvation the school might be out of a biology teacher

a pinkie for a tegu with an 8 inch svl is like a piece of popcorn for you, feed them as much as he will eat every single day, they grow at an incredibly quick rate and your tegu will not grow at the rate it should on a pinkie every other day. my argentine is about the same size as you describe and today alone it ate 2 large hoppers, a quail egg, 12 super worms and a couple adult dubia, he might have eaten more if i offered it, tell your teacher what he thinks will cause the tegu to have stunted growth and health problems due to poor nutrition, filll him up everyday you’ll be amazed how quickly it will grow

Yeah at this age is where it’s good to fill them up since there growing at very fast rates, it’s when there adults you have to moderate their food intake because adults can get obese.

Thats very weird to me, and Argus monitor that never ate every day. What did you fill it up with at feedings to sustain it? I’m most likely getting a baby next year, was this year but now getting a new Tegu.

And yeah, did you get the Tegu alreadY?

My bad, re-reading the 1st post you obviously already got it. Was it an Argentine or a Columbian? Or maybe a Blue?

Why such a long wait? And what kind of supplies are you buying for $500? You should hit a local reptile show, things are much cheaper at shows.

Why don’t you have your teacher register on the forums and let him research and then debate it with some of the guys on here that have raised them for years and years? there is absolutely no comparison to book knowledge and actual hands on experience.

Well, for all of you people that are wondering why i dont house until then...its because i dont have space at my house and neither does my teacher. Also the enclosure is already built and at school...AND there is the little fact that we dont have any money from the district yet...so if we were to buy the poor little guy, he would not have the right conditions. So there! And for you Mr. Big-hydro.... i am perfectly capable of handling the research on my own...Im not some 11 year old boy that wants a weptile...And mr...before you jump down my throat...maybe you should ask me if i have any experience with reptiles or not...FOR YOUR INFORMATION...me and my teacher had a pair of breeding Argus monitors (which by the way are more difficult to take care of then Tegus). And they did fine!! Again i do all the research i can possibly do and yes, book knowledge and research are very valuable....if you had any knowledge you would read a book or two yourself...and idc if you have been taking care of them for "years and years." So there...any one else want to insult my intelligence?

Thanks for those people that were not jerks when they responded, i appreciate it :)

Mike no one was rude on here. Big-Hydro is just saying why don’t you have your teacher here. No one said you were an eleven year old kid wanting a reptile. Your teacher will be there person having main possession of the animal and will have to get the money to pay for it. Your Ackie comment was very rude, they are not harder to care for then B@W Argentine tegus and here is why. Ackies diet is only composed of meat and Tegus are herbivores therefore can be harder to provide the right mix of foods, tegus have a strict humidity requirement and tegus also grow to a larger size which also gives them a bigger craving for food which also raises that bill! lol Just wondering on the Ackies..did you get them to breed? That would be really cool.

Ok, well just so you all know i am enrolled in a INDEPENDENT study in Animal husbandry, and creating a self-sustaining "ecosystem." Which means; I am entitled to do almost everything on my own. Really the only thing that my teacher will be doing...is obtaining the finances from the district and feeding the lizard if i should be absent on a feeding day...THATS ALL. And i was not aware that the nickname for an ARGUS monitor was an ACKIE...b/c im 99.99% positive that they are different...Heres one major difference...Ackies get to about 3 feet max...while Argus monitors can get up to 5 feet! Big difference!! Also Argus monitors are very temperamental... while ackies not so much. (Correct me if im wrong).

And to answer your breeding question...

My teacher had had the monitors the year before i knew him so they had laid eggs once before and he was unsuccessful. When i entered his class and got to know the lizards, i did some research and what not and they mated again and we had all the proper gear and stuff but i think that the substrate was not wet enough (and the intern teacher that was an idiot btw...kept opening the enclosure). And then we thought they did it again, but the eggs were unfortunately unfertilized. By that time the female had attacked the male a few times...so we decided that it would be best for the lizards if we just gave them to a good home (SEPARATELY)!!!

Nice, that is a big monitor! How did you house them both in that little cage you had? If they where not full grown I understand but they were breeding I thought?

Lol? Little cage? No offense but its not a little cage my any means...i can garuntee that my cage is bigger than most of you people. The MAIN part of the enclosure is 6x6x8 (which is large enough to house two of them as it is). Then there is a drop down where there is about 3 feet of digging material. That part of the enclosure is 6x6x4.5 (Which is bigger than most tegu cages any way). Then there is a side conpartment that is about 8x3x3. So im pretty sure that my enclosure is NOT too small...i probably could have fit 3 argus monitors in it lol! although i never would cuz thats cruel. So yea ima try and get some pics of it up so yall can stop jumping down my throat :)
