 Petco got ’em

are they hard to take care of? because i’m, afraid that by having them at a petco even for almost 200 $ someone inisperienced will buy and kill him. and he is in a wayyyyyy too small tank right now. poor thing.

Not hard, at least in my opinion, because they are from argentina, where there are large temperature variations, which makes them pretty adaptable compared to other delicate herps. But, they are expensive, if you’re not ready to build a 8x4x4 cage in your home, don’t even think about it.

I know it’s sad that the lizard is stuck at Petco, but what do you think will happen if you buy one there? They’re gonna say, "Hey, we just sold a tegu, better order another one." The cycle will continue. The best thing you can do is not contribute to the cycle. Get a tegu from a reputable breeder instead.

ShellBabe,

I have read a few of your posts and quite frankly a large lizard is not for you, in an earlier thread you mentioned your mom might say no to some leo rescue so why on earth would a tegu be any different (not to mention cage size & feeding costs are not for younger/inexperienced keepers)
and what Chris said about the cycle with pet shops is very true, all you are doing is allowing them to get more and more animals (and it’s even worse when you try to "rescue" one from such stores, cause in all reality most poeple who "rescue" reptiles from pet stores themselves dont know how to take acceptable care of the animals and even if they do, what about the replacement animal that will be ordered in it’s place?? cant come back and rescue everything) So yea, wait till you are old enough to move out on your own and have a sustainable income to feed an eating machine

i think that it is harder for someone younger to fully appreciate all the work that goes into taking care of any animial but it will teach any one hard work! I am a little unexperienced but do reaserch and am having a great time with my tegu its a learning experience! I for one dont think you have to be an expert to love and care for any animial as long as you respect them and take good care of them and obviously have the money and the right size tank there is no reason an unexperianced person cannot learn and love and care for any animial be it a huge lizard right down to the tinest.
