 Questions for ameivaboy

hey ameivaboy. can you tell if my tiger ameiva is male or female?

were you ever abble to hold your toger ameivas or are they a look dont touch lizard?

if i built a 4’x2’x2’ (LxWxH) enclosure could i be able to get one or two more tiger ameivas to put in it? can they live together or will they fight?

here is a pic of him/her.

let me know if you need a better pic to tell if it is a he or she

thanks in advance!

Looks like a male from the jowel size to me.

They ARE A look but dont touch species.

I have kept groups of 1.3 successfully in a 4 x 2 x 2 but 1.2 seemed to work a bit better.
Some ameivas will fight or show dominance over one another, you’ll need multiple basking spots (or one very large one) numerous hides etc etc etc and still have to keep an eye on the regularly

 Questions for ameivaboy

okay thanks!! what does 1.3 and 1.2 mean? is that 1 male and 3 females or 1 male and 2 females? i see people posting those numbers allot but i have never figured out what they mean.

i really want more of these. they are amazing lizards and i think I’m going to ask for a bigger tank (hopefully a 4x2x2) and a few more tiger ameivas for Christmas and my birthday

i thought they were a look don’t touch lizard just from the way they act but the pet store guy said that because he is CB and still young that he would still be tamable. judging from his size can you give me a guess on his age? next time i go to the pet store I’m going to ask for the breeders email or website so i can see if he really is CB or not, and if he is ill be able to find out his age hopefully.

thanks for all your help!!!

HOw big is the ameiva?
I promise you the pet store guy has no idea what he is talking about. No ameiva is for taming. By nature they are high strung nervous aniamls and a "tame" one should be considered a sick one.
The closest to "tame" you’re going to get is tong or hand feeding with them and that takes a bit of time.
I highley doubt that there is a "breeder" more likely they got the animal from a wholesaler who sells WC aniamls which there is no doubt in my mind that that ameiva is WC (I have never even heard of anyone trying to breed them besides myself an if anyone has I’d surely be interested in talking to them)

1.3 does mean 1 male and 3 females or if you have something like 1.1.2 that would be 1 male 1 female and 2 unsexed animals

what is the name of the store you got this one from?

i got it from the petsmart near me. i know most of there reptiles are cb and i know the guy in the reptile department fairly well. he seems to know a bit about reptiles too. he said he has a bearded dragon and a few other lizards. im going to ask them the name of the breeder next time i go and ill come back and tell ya what they say. he is around 3 1/2 inches from tip of nose to base of tail. he never stays still long enough to measure. the guy at petsmart told me that him and one other came in at the same time and there were around 5 inches from nose to tip of tail when they got them. the other got sold in a week and they had this one for 3-4 months before i bought him.

Yea, Petsmart sells WC animals. The guy there is full of it
at that size sounds like an adult.
I’m sure petsmart has a contract with some large wholesaler such as Cal Zoo
which would have CBB and WC animals.

 Questions for ameivaboy

i havent seen Jasper for over 24 hours now. he is in a hole under his water dish. should i chase him out or jsut let him be and he will come out when he feels like it? the temps and humidity are correct as far as i can tell. his basking spot is 110f surface temp and his hot side of the cage is around 85f and cool side is 77f. humidity is 52%. i mist the cage a few times a day with water that has sat out for 24-48 hours to let the chemicals evaporate out.

help please

alot of pet stores claim they have cb animals to confuse customers. CB-captive born is little more than a FH-farm hatched reptile. What they do is collect (wild caught ) gravid females and care for them till they lay the eggs and then discard the female and raise the eggs and sell them to stores as CB reptiles. Now CBB-captive born and bred which means the parents were bred in captivity and the eggs were incubated/hatched and raised in captivity

I wouldnt bother him, let him be, hunger will drive him out eventually.
When I got my first group of ameivas they didnt come out for more than a week.
it seems anytime a stressful situation arises they will stay underground for days and then re appear.

thanks. yeah i figured i shouldnt mess with him. i left him alone and today he came out. basked for a few hours, went to the bathroom. then ate 5 mealies. basked some more then went back under his water dish. i hadto put 4 big rocks under the corners of his water dish in the dirt 3 days ago so it wouldnt squish him because when he made burrows under there it would sink down to about 1 inch from the bottom and i was scared it would squish him.

he seems to be doing well.

i was just wandering if the kind of thermometer/hygrometer i got is accurate or not. i read that the digital ones are the only ones that are accurate but then i just read that the stick on digital ones are junk. this is the one i got. do you think this is okay or should i get one with a probe? i spent 25$ on this at petsmart but if it will not work i will try and take it back and get one with a probe. i also have a heat gun that i use to measure surface temp of his basking spot.
