  Tupinambis teguixin

I have just purchased a Tupinambis teguixin and am wondering about other compatible cage mates. I have been thinking about a green plumed basilisk. If you have any suggestions please let me know. I am not interested in breeding right now so i am trying to stay out of possible genetic compatability. Also, what is a good guees for max weight on this Tegu. By the way her name is Sheba. I can find all i want on max length but nothing on weight.

Mixing species usually isn’t the greatest idea. If you want a cage mate like roachey said just get another Tegu if you feel you really want 2 in a tank.

Thanks for the info. That saved me a lot of hardship. So another tegu it is. How many types of tegu are available on the market today? I am not really to worried about aggressiveness. Mine is only a few months old and is fairly passive about being touched and petted but she still hisses a lot when you pick her up, Though she doesnt struggle like she did when i first got her.

there are 5 different tegus. There are blues, there are golden (which is just a color morph? of a b&w columbian) a b&w columbian, a paraguay red, and arg B&W. There are also an occasional hybrid between blues and reds, and I think maybe some hybrids with b&w arg and red and b&w arg with blue..... You can mix tegus together.. and don’t worry about them accidentally breeding.. it’s some what difficult and requires burmation. If you aren not worried about agression at all.. I suggest a golden tegu, it would be a perfect compliment to your b&w columbian and they are just beautiful, and they have the exact same requirements as yours has now... :)

of this your first tegu, then start off with one then work your why up from there. also i suggest an arg. B&W tegu, because they are much hradier and CB where the colombian tegu is WC, usually.

Here are the 5 "types" of Tegus available in the pet trade today. There are the Columbian Tegus (both B/W and gold varieties), Argentine B/W and the Chacoan variety (northern, more white) of these, Paraguayan Red, Argentine Red, and the Blues. The only intergrades that are available, as far as I know, are the Red/Blue crosses. The Blue Tegu also comes in the albino mutation. A few years back Ron St. Pierre produced a couple of animals they called a "Snowball" Tegu that was gorgeous... all white, no pattern, with dark burgundy eyes. I’ve not seen another one since those first two.

I prefer the Blue Tegus, just because I think their appearance is very striking. They can have wonderful personalities but it takes a little more patience than it does with the Argentine B/W Tegus. Argentines are the ones to go with if you want a large, impressive lizard that also has a great disposition.

Also, Tegus do not need to brumate or hybernate in order to breed. I’ve even had Tegus that bred and produced eggs in the late fall and early winter, before any hybernation could take place.

Tegus can be addictive but always keep in mind that they are bottomless pits when it comes to food. My Tegus can out-eat any monitor that I have here. My adult male Argentine easily takes 4-5 medium rats or 12 adult mice in a meal and he’d probably take more. That can get pretty expensive.

You have all been very helpfull in my searches to help raise a healthy Tegu. This is my first attempt at raising a large Tegu. I have had A Nile Monitor when i was young. Real thoughtfull gift for an 8 yr old, eh? I have been raising Blue Bellied Race runners since about 1986. Thought it was time to grow up and out. Some Day I hope to get into the breeding aspect. Also, I will have a picture of Sheba on sometime next week. She is just finishing shedding now and I also just finished her new cage so It is going to be a bit of a transition for her going from a 20 gal to a 6’x5’. I think she will love it. Once again, Thanx for all of your help and keep in touch. Knowing it all is never enough.LOL Herps Rule

Sorry about he pics but my camera broke. I just did a measurement yesterday and SVT is 8 inches. Overall she is 22 inches. Talk about some quick growth. I got her the first of august and then she only had an svt of 2 inches. This is really great. I am looking for property now so I can Get more varied types of lizards and try some breeding and farming.
