ok *sigh* done! hard work building an easy cage ! . ok so the materials you need are:

55 gal rubbermaid tub

hand saw

eco earth & sand

drill

saudering iron

screen mesh.

And your assorted lizard materials.

ok so first you drill a hole so you can start sawing from there

make a square that you can fit your light on ^

than make a second one ^

ok done with the hardest part!

now you get out yer saudering iron! but hold on there! first with a pair of scissors cut some wire mesh into a square thats about 2-3 inches to big for your holes on each side.

Then sauder the mesh to the plastic on both holes. ^

And you are done actually "making" the cage!

now add playsand mixed with eco earth. make it aroun 2-3 inches deep.

AND YOU ARE DONE (but add all his "toys" and lights) but if you want you can add some ventilation holes.

Enjoy and hope this helps... and if you are really desperate and can pick a cage up from SLC UTAH then email me at th3m3thod@gmail . com i am not sure what the price will be but ask iand i will make a deal.

your finished project ^

wow...wtf? it is a perfectly good looking cage. lizards prefer not to be able to see out. and the lights wont get too hot because the saudering iron takes a long time to melt through. like i said you can add ventilation. and you should be one to talk mxracer your cage isnt a piece of gold.

ok I am sorry. but I dont have very much carpentry skills, and my lizards enjoy it. if they enjoy it and it is better than my other one...then it will do. i dont care about looks, i care about if my lizards are comfortable. so im sorry. but i just like the cage myself and i dont like being kinda insulted about it. my other cage sucked and this one works really well sooo.........cya

Isn’t that cage kind of boring. Wouldnt you rather like to be able to see in the cagee without
having to like open thee whole thing up?

there definitly needs to be some kind of thermal gradient....and i would assume a tegu would like to see its surroundings like it would be able to in the wild instead of being in a box.

i was going to make a plexiglass see through thing, but in his old aquarium he would charge at the wall, to try to get out. and this cage is temporary! im going to start building an 8x4x3 or around there.

usually when reptiles charge at the side of an enclosure for seemingly no reason its because they are overheating and desperatly trying to find a cooler area hence the purpose of thermal gradients.

 Cage building instructions

guys i have been building cages for a long time know and im actully going to school and studying reptile behavior , wel what im trying to say is that you tegu needs some type of window to see out of because they do like to see whats around them , and dude to tell you the truth if you got called in for something and they call any type of animal cop dude your fucked because that is really not good for the tegu and it has no why to cool off and no room to roam , it stresses out you tegu and thats not realy good for it and you should know that ,, and not to sound like a know it all i actully build the enclosure that why you have said how to and do no think again , go out and buy a cheap soft terraium for like 60 to 80 bucks and work from there . if you dont care wat i had to say then sell your tegu you dont need it later

He built it b/c he dosen’t have the money for a HUGE new cage, or the money to custome build a cage. I kept my retic is something very similar for a few months till I had the money to buy something else. I would just take one of those lights off so he has a cool side though. As long as you take the tegu out regulary he shouldn’t have a problem not being able to see outside.

my two cents.

I think you people are being $%^&^ to Cacho.
The cage is fine as a temp cage. As far as overheating goes it isnt going to happen either because looking closely at the picture it appears that the light on the right side is a coil UVB bulb (from the color of light that it’s giving off.)
but then again what the hell do I know about tegus, reptiles or caging :)

I agree with this becouse I have two water dragons and one tegu plus alot more animials but I have read over and over again in my research that they dont believe in glass they cant see it so why would they believe in it! I think this cage is a good idea, cost effective, and saves alot of room I think the next tank I need I will make this one! Thank you!

GREAT! I have boamaster cages and there great. You can’t put a whole lot of bedding down though, only maybe a inch or so. What size cage are you getting? I got a 8x3x2 with the 25 dollar hole cut out for $415. Are you getting the 10 footer? heres a pic of the two i bought. The blue thing on the one picture is a typical pocket knife, and then you can see my mom sitting on the larger of the two.

you could possibly modify a boamaster to hold more substrate which would be more suitable for a tegu.

put an 8’ x 1’ board (or two 4’ x 1’ boards) on the inside in front of the door(s) thus giving you a full foot of substrate (I have a foot deep of bedding in my cages, which is fine for my colombian but my argentine would certainly love to be able to dig deeper whcih is a future project.) just a thought

I just reread the size of the cages, since theyare only 2’ high that kinda limits space, could still use the same concept just maybe not 12" high.

I built both my current tegu cages at 30" tall to give me enough room.

You could just order one of those cages and tell him you want it taller, so you can put the one foot board on the front for more substrate. He’ll custome make any size that you need/want.

KMA did you read the whole post or just start insulting people after looking at pictures? i would also like to know how you could build 2 that are better for the same cost.

his cage is fine for a temporary cage and thats what he is using it for.

are you talking about MY cages??? If so you are not the sharpest tool in the shed. If you wanted to build those two cages out of the exact same materials, not to mention all the time you would have to spend building them, staining, proofing, and siliconing. Trust me buddy, the way I took was the best for the price.

no, Dj, i wasn’t talking about your enclosures
i wasn’t insulting anybody or anything, and of course i read the whole post, and from what i read he’s making another for his beardie, and even if it was a temporary why would he put it in a container with so much work done to it?
and just get your self some cheap melemine and some cheap glass
if you lived in my area that is pretty cheap

KMA, I made one for my beardie because his other cage sucked! It was fine but the light melt the sides of the plastic and the mesh, so i had to get a new one. And all the nice bigger than 20 gal. cages are expensive. A 40 gal. here is like $100-$120 and this was cheaper and bigger.

even tho it isnt a expensive and nice looking cage, a rubbermaid bin set up the right way works just fine for most small herps. just because they dont spend hundreds on a nice fancy cage doesnt mean they are not taking care of their animals.
