Jasper is dying

my amieva Jasper is doing terrible. the last month he has been slowly getting worse now he is really bad. he never opens his eyes and hardly ever holds his head up. he just lays on the platform under his light. when i misted him a few hours ago he ran and hid. i just found him by his water bowl and he was bleeding from his eye i dont know what to do. i thought of taking him to let the vet put him to sleep but i dont have the money for that. and i couldnt do anything like that myself. i dont want him to suffer tho. can anyone help me please!

i already took him to the vet about 4 months ago and he has a parasite. i just cannot get him to take his meds at all. he refuses to open his mouth even if i try to pry it. and now the meds are almost gone. alot got wasted trying to get some in him.

Ya know, this is a prime example why some people shouldn’t be purchasing reptiles. Don’t purchase unless you can afford its proper needs, that includes the vet bills too!!!

dont accuse me of not taking care of my animals! you have no clue. i have spent already over $200 on him to try to get him healthy. you have probably never even owned an ameiva. they are harder to keep than any animal i bet you have ever had. so you can keep rude comments to yourself!

most ameivas live a very short time in captivity. i was told he would only last 2-3 months. he has lasted more than twice that long and when i took him to the vet he told me my care for Jasper was the best he has personally ever seen for these animals.

if your just going to accuse me of stuff you have no clue about dont post at all.

i knew that by posting here on this forum all the immature idiots here would jump on me saying i dont take care of him and i shouldn’t own reptiles if i cannot pay for them. that is why i have mostly left this forum and joined one that is not full of flaming and spaming.

i posted did this to let ameivaboy know what is happening because he helped me alot when i first got Jasper.

after this thread is finished you will probably never see me here again because of immature people like you ReptoDude

I’m going to have to disagree with you here. This is not a prime example of why some people shouldnt be purchasing reptiles. He paid over $200 in vet bills for a $20 lizard. That is more than 90% of the people on these forums would have done (despite what they claim). He Listened to every bit of advice I gave him and took it seriously whcih is more than can be said for a lot of the forum users here. Nobody has expendable cash to pay for vet bills, at a certain point you have to realize when too much is too much, and has nothing to do with the amount you care about the animal. I would never suggest someone flush their college fund to prolong the life of a dying lizard. I spent over $200 in vet bills for that male jeweled lacerta to just die. Vets arent miracle workers and only so much can be done. I think your comment here was in poor judgement and bad tatse. I am not opposed to flaming retards that dont listen to advice nor get vet treatment. this person did neither and doesnt deserve to be kicked while he is down

reptodude is stupid, and shouldnt even own animals, if he has no compassion for them!

thank you for your sympathy. i put him in the freezer today to euthanize him. i will miss him allot but at least he isnt suffering anymore.

ReptoDude: i am sorry i blew up like i did. when i did everything i could do for him and then someone says i shouldnt even own reptiles it hurts allot. especially when i am already feeling bad about him dying. please forgive me.

ameivaboy: thank you for backing me up. it means allot to me that you think i did the best i could for Jasper.

Dumb1: thank you for your sympathy and kind words. it does suck allot when pets die. especially when i had jasper for so short of a time and he was so sick. this must be the absolute worst part of owning pets.

Honestly, I had no idea what you paid that much. I figured it was another one of those "can’t afford it" type of deals. To be honest, when I was younger, I couldn’t afford to many vet bills myself. They do get quite expensive and they are something you don’t want to happen and don’t see happen that often.

Sorry to read that about your Ameiva.

As for Dumb1, afraid reading your screenname, don’t even get me started there ;)

I’ve kept sever animals in which you just have to take drastic measures to solve their issues. It is a sad situation and sometimes can be hard to deal with.

I know how you feel with spending a lot with such an inexpensive lizard. You don’t spend the money thinking of how much you paid for the pet, you spend it thinking how much it cares to you, and thats what counts. Prop’s to you for doing what you can bro.

thanks ReptoDude. it really sucks when an animal dies after so much put in to it.
i understand where you were coming from too. i have seen posts on these forums too where someone buys a lizard and just lets it die because they dont want to spend money on it. but that isnt me. i do whatever i can to keep my animals healthy but it gets to a point when they are sick like jasper was when i have to say thats enough and just let them go.

i might be getting a water dragon for my birthday in February. will they have some good CBB ones at the Hamburg reptile show in February? i think for my birthday my mom is going to take me and my best friend to the reptile show. i cant wait. i hope i end up coming home with a dragon. that would be an awesome birthday.

i feel your pain, dude. i just had two of my pets pass at the same time on the same day, both of them as healthy as ever, so i too am in a lot of pain, and i wish the best for you and the best for your passed ameiva in it’s afterlife.
