The only tegu that would live comfortably in that size cage is a young tegu of any species.

Chile no longer allows export, so you chances of getting any Callopistes species are null.
You could look into ameivas but they usually dont fare well in captivity.

 Tegu in 4x2x2 cage

An adult colombian tegu would go nuts in a 4 x 2 x 2 cage. I have an adult female Colombian in a 6.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 cage.
I once had to temporarily house her in the 4 x 2 x 2 I raised her in for about a week to do some major cage rennovations and by the end of that week she had began to rub her snout raw because of the confines of such a small enclosure.

would a 6x4x5 be to small for a B&W argentine tegu?

ok my next question is how long would you say a baby Columbian tegu could last in a 4x2x2 I’ll start planing on building a bigger cage.

I had my colombian in a 4 x 2 for about a year.
Though if you want an animal to "handle" a colombian would be your poorest choice.

Scott, rule of thumb generally accepted is colombians and blue tegus need at leastv 18 square feet of floor space (6 x 3) and reds and argentines need 32 sq ft of floor space (8 x 4).
I think 5’ in height is a bit excessive.

Your smallest easier to handle tegu would a be blue (though every tegu will have an individual "personality")

Scott,
2.5 ft in substrate would certainly let them build some nice burrows, build a sturdy cage though that’s gonna be heavy lol.
you could probably get away with that size cage as long as the animal gets to explore outside of it frequently

 Tegu in 4x2x2 cage

i think the best tegu for me would be the Columbian because it stays smaller and from what i read if you take it easy and have the tegu trust you then they will calm down some what. I am not really looking for a tegu that acts like a lap dog i know to respect them. They are a large lizards that should be respected i feel that it would be a great experience for on the count of i want be a reptile vet. I am in the process of finding a college that has to do with veterinarian assistants. also i wanted to know what is the average length these guys grown each month or year.
