WE NEED ADVICE i was actually just going to post a question about twitching as well. my hatchling columbian will have a rapid twitch in its front or hind legs while basking very frequently. i saw on tegu talk that bert says the twitch could be caused by low uvb or high temperatures. the teg has proper uvb and its basking spot is about 100. the teg only twitches when its directly in the warmest spot of its basking area which leads me to belive it is twitching due to high temps. i’d never heard of twitch due to high temps before and i would think that the teg would rather just move to a cooler area of the cage rather than keep twitching. iguanas twitch when they are too cold and i’d never heard of this before. if any one else knows or has observed this behavior leave a post please.
adios

WE NEED ADVICE I have never seen either of my tegus (teguixin & merinae) "twitch" in any fashion, and I keep both their basking spots between 115-120.
I highley doubt it’s from temperature. A more feasible presumption would be a Calcium/UVB issue.
What is your name on tegu talk Got Herps? ?
Dont think I have seen you there.

WE NEED ADVICE yes it could be possible. ive only had him for about a month and i dont think he was under uvb before i got him so maybe his body is taking awhile to process it, i dont know. i just joined tegutalk and my name is gotherps? . i found the info on teg twitching under general info on the main home page at the bottom under the care sheets. it seems like no one else know much about it. has anyone else observed twitching?

WE NEED ADVICE the twitching could very possibly be due to a lack of D3. the UVB lights give them the D3 and aid in the obsorbtion of calcium, but when there is a lack, the muscle and bone don’t get proper amouts, which frequently result in the "twitching" motions described, and mostly in the front and back legs due to their bulky muscle build. you can add a D3 suppliment, like calcium powder, to food and feed it to them, but it’s not as efficient as teh lights themselves. the sick tegu described may be dying from a very severe case of MBD, or metabolic bone disease. it’s really sad...:(
hope i could help,
inferno

WE NEED ADVICE I think he is starting to do better now. he has been on the shot the vet gave us for a week and the twitching has gone down quiet alot, except for a few twitching in the toes. the only problem now is trying to get him to eat the right kinds of food. The people at the Reptile Store i rescued him from say the only thing he has ever ate is live pinkie, fuzzies, and mice which i kno is terrible for him because its fatty and they cant quite digest the fur, so i have been trying to give him dusted crickets, milworms, waxworms, ground turkey, chicken, eggs, apples, bananas, strawberries but he only ate one cricket and a couple bites of the turkey. i dont think he is going to die he has a lot of energy and loves to swim and be out on the floor, i will do every thing in my power to make sure he survives im not just going to give up on him
