 Ivan the tegu

This is ivan he is very sweet, other then the fact he came in to my boyfriends and my life very sick and in need of some special care and love, which we plan on giving him he looks much better then he looked just a couple of weeks ago when we rescued him. he has a broken leg that the vet says will never be completely right but the vet also says for the most part we caught the MBD just in time and he should pull through which is happy news for us since we have decided to keep him as part of our family

well the broken leg is one of the effects but we have most of his twitching under control with the meds the vet gave us, other then the slight twitch of his toes every once and a while we think he may just pull through after all. the vet was so upset when we brought him in cuz he was in such bad shapebut he believes we caught the MBD just in time. But i went to the same store where i rescued him from, today and they had more brand new tegus with out uv systems in their tanks i was so upset cuz i dont have the money to rescue them all cuz of course all their herps are way too overpriced. im just happy i was able to save Ivan but im having problems trying to get him to eat the right kinds of food all he wants is live fuzzies and mice and im trying to get him to switch to a healthier diet but he turns his nose up to everything i offer. so i could use some tips

what else are you trying to feed him? nothin wrong with good ol’ mice. if you’re just tryin to get him started, give him some ground turkey as a temporary food. try super worms, crickets, fruits are ok in moderation, just stay away from lots of banana, alot of potassium isnt the best thing.

i have tried all those things, but from what i have researched and what my repti vet says mice are very fatty and tegus dont really digest the fur well. i just want to make sure he has every thing that will insure a healthy life for my baby. I have ocd when it comes to following care sheets and i have been researching and speaking to a local breeder for a while before i decided to get one i was planning on getting one from that breeder in a couple of weeks but i went to get some crickets and ivan needed me.

not to insult your vet, but i have never heard of mice being fatty. tegu’s digest the fur just fine, hell, i feed mine crawfish and he digests everything. if you want to try an all insect diet, look into different kinds of roaches, i hear they are a worthwhile investment.

yeah hissing roaches are a food source, albeit a bit expensive. you may have to do a bit of research, but roaches can be ordered online. look for lobster roaches and orange headed roaches.

Here is a Link to a recent thread on the monitor forum. There are always 1 or 2 of these going on there. Give it a read and you can contact any of these guys for help. I have to agree with the part of mice being a very good food source for your tegu. I am a big believer in using whole food as it is the biggest bang for your buck for overall nutrional value. As long as your temps and set up are good you should have no problems.

hey rooroo! its really sad that ivan has had it tough so far. i can empathise with u. sounds like he’s in really good hands now though. we live in ireland and from what i’ve seen in the reptile stores so far, they are well taken care of. ireally hope that doesn’t change here. can i ask you what MBD is?
all the best lookin after ivan. give him a kiss from us :)

MBD stands for Metabolic Bone Disease. its a bone condition caused by lack of vitamin D3, and can lead to softened bones and deformities.

Yeah Metabolic Bone Disease is quite serious, it causes thier bones to become very soft so any harsh movement can fracture a bone in many different places. it also causes seizures or what looks like twitching in the toes. Ivan is doing well except until we are sure we have the MDB under control my vet has recomemded keeping him in a 20 gallon sick tank so he cant hurt himself further, i cant wait til he is better and we can put him in his brand new enclosure im sure he will love it.
