PETCO strikes again!!! 
okay, i was just in petco (which we all know sucks) and guess what they had in there? an extremely malnurished baby argentine b/w tegu that was around 8 inches long. they had it marked as a juvinile columbian tegu, and i wanted to smack all of their fat-buttmunch faces in there and tell them that what they were doing was wrong, but since i’m only 14 1/2, they wouldn’t listen to me in my life even though i’m sure they know crap next to me. i wanted to buy it and get it out of there, but 2 things kept me back.
1. i don’t wanna buy it and then give them the money to go and buy more lower grade animals so that more people like me would come in, feel bad, and "rescue" it. it’s just supporting a painful circle of pitiful buisiness and animal abuse.
2. i am going to the All New England Reptile Expo in April, and i was gonna get a new tegu there (if they have more hatchlings like they did when i went a while back. they had none last show, but i’m hopeful they’ll have the hatchlings this year) from a nice breeder. maybe a blue if i can get my hands and money on one.

yeah petco does suck for reptile care. i’ve never seen a tegu tho in all the petco’s ive ever been in. they always have the same assortment of malnurished imported water dragons, turtles, geckos, and beardies.

OMG!!!! I feel the same way and I’m the same age!! I went into a Petco about 2 months ago with a half dead Sav in a tank...I almost feel like coming back and throwing a brick at their window...with a complaint letter on it...kinda a weird idea but something like that would be beneficial...as much of a terrible thing that is, it is still wrong for Petco to put the animals and us in pain...

You did the right thing in not buying the animal. It sucks knowing something is just going to sit there and die, but at the same time you’ve gotta think about the big picture. A lot of people are lost on that concept. I’m glad at such a young age you are aware of how things work.

it really is painful. to think that somebody is going to buy the poor thing (assuming it doesn’t die) and then as soon as they do another animal just like it will be put right back in. i swear, it never ends. i say that breeders should realize what they do, and even though they would get paid, they should pass the offer and not sell them to stores like petco. as for taking them from the wild. isn’t there enough breeders out there? it stuns me at how many peolple would be too lazy to find a certified breeder. i’m not saying i haven’t bought an animal from petco, but that was before i knew how things worked and + i was four years old, so you can only imagine.
we work very hard to spread the truth to people, because we do Reptile Presentations to kids + adult, etc, and a huge part is to raise awarness of this pet-trade madness. reptiles are becoming more and more common throughout the pet-trade, and a large chunk of the people buying them are kids telling their parents. households with more kids tend to own at least some type of herp, and what better way to inform the public than to get to the roots? we also put up posters and whatnot. it really enrages me what goes on.

I beleive most corporate pet stores (petco/pet smart) have contracts with large wholesalers (i.e. Cal zoo) and buy strictly from them. AS I’m sure you noticed most reptiles in actual "pet stores" are WC.
There are the common leos and beardies that the wholesale companies get from private breeders (usually on large scale for dirt cheap) or farmed (a misleading term) animals such as ball pythons as well. But for the vast majority of the animals you see there never were any breeders.

My Petco isn’t the worst, but my example earlier was the worst I’ve been too. My Petco is actually partially controlled by the Humane society as far as I know so I don’t worry as much....
