 One of my newest rescues...

I posted this in the monitor forum too.

But this guy is my newest rescues, He’s a red tegu in case you didnt notice, but his previous owner was a drug peddler and was seriously abusing his animals, the guy was in a 2 X 2 box with a light bulb set on the corner of his box, but when the guy was running from the law, the lamp and light bulb fell on him and badly burned his tail and back legs and of course he couldn’t move to get the lamp off of him, because he was in such a small enclosure. Here he is...

the rat in this pic is meant as a size comparison, not for food.

any info on treating his burns would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks alot, F M

I am treating burns on my red tegu, unfortunately by my own faults. I work with a rescue for exotics in NY and i brought my tegu to the person in charge. She gave me a solution, i wish i knew the exact name for it. I believe it was something like chlorohydrin or something along the lines of that. It is used by vets to clean cages, wounds and heal. It is completely safe to use on any surfaces. This solution causes a reaction with the skin, and allows for it to scab faster. I also am using a triple antibiotic on the area once a day. I have found that Stop n’ Shop brand works better than neosporin. In the morning I clean the wound with the solution, after a warm bath, and then put the triple AB on it. Unfortunately, the burns, as you probably know, will scar.

Good Luck to you and your tegu!

i believe hes in good hands now. anyone that has the initiative to take in an injured animal has to have their heart in the right place. what monitors did/do you keep?

thanks alot to both of you, and yes I would kill or be killed for my scaly buddies.:)

I keep another little sav that was from the same rescue, and I keep a black throat.

the tegu is now my biggest, and we will also be using him for classes at our local center, he has a story behind him.

But he is a little on the offensive now, just hissing and jerking when you touch him, but I would be too if the only contact I had for a long period of my life was a 150 watt light bulb!!!

any calming tips???
hes about 2.5 feet SVL
4 feet STL

Thanks alot, and I’ll try those remedies.

time is the only chance for him to calm down. he was mistreated by another person not too long ago, so chances are he wont be trusting another for a while. just be patient. start slowly. if you come on too strong, you’ll annihilate any chance of calming him. place him in an open front enclosure in a high activity area when he settles in. you and others passing by may acclimate him to your presence. when he is no longer wary of you passing, then move to physical contact. again, work your way up to him. start by just placing your hand in the enclosure for a few minutes, every day. then, allow him to come to you. the key is to take baby steps.

you can try that, but give him about a week before touching him. what you can do is just sit in front of the enclosure and read or listen to music, somthing you enjoy doing in your spare time.

got him at an exotic animal shop a few miles from where i live. he was bred and born there. i actually got the chance to see his parents. his father was a beast of a black and white. his mother was a red about half his size.
