 Shedding issues???

is it just me or does patches look a weeeeee bit duller than what a red should be???



i checked out his burn this morning and it looks like around the burn is alot redder than the rest of his body.



see what i mean???

if this is a shed gone bad should soaking him help get it off???
or should i try one of those fancy shed aids???

well he’s prolly just in a poor condition overall from his past stupid owner. i would pass on the shed sprays but a half hour soak in a warm bath would definitly do him good. make sure you wash the tub out first so that theres no soap residue that could get into his burns!

Tegus dont have femoral pores. Males however will have two small pimple like bumps near the vent.

Yes tail side of the vent.

I dont keep red tegus and have limited experience interacting with larger ones.
If it’s a shed gone wrong it would be obvious. Usually tegus (and varanids) have issues shedding their toes because of inappropriate humidity levels. If not caught and taken care of these stuck pieces can bind the toes cutting off circulation and eventually causing the loss of digits (which is all too common)
Your animal does kinda remind me of my snakes when the are in *blue*. I have only noticed this once or twice in my colombian (never have seen it in my argentine that I can recall) and has just been a preshed thing as far as my animal is concerned. I wouldnt worry about anything until you start seeing patches of skin obviouly not being shed off.

I dont suggest giving tegus baths unless there is clearly a shedding issue whcih I dont see with yours. A lot of people give their tegus baths as a regular part of keeping but it isnt needed. Just keep your cage humid, especially the bottom layer of substrate where the tegus spends it’s time while hiding, sleeping etc.

well i kno that tegus dont need baths obviously they arent out at spas takeing warm baths out in the wild but my tegus lovvvvvvvvvvve taking baths they love it so much they poop in it on me all the time just to show me they love it ..... hah o well yes if your red look like dull in color it could just be a shed coming u obviously dont keep him in that box right???? so just bump up the humidity a bit in his cage and he should shed if thats whats going on just like my geckos and uros my tegus gecko like ashy looking a few days b 4 their shed thats just how i no when to rais their humidity ......but anyways thats a great looking red besides the burn.. is that burn scabed over yet? ....

of course i do. I thought all tegus were supposed to be in housed in card board boxes. =]

No, those pics were taken the day we brought here home, she has a much bigger enclosure now.

its getting there but not really to much of a difference, alot of dead skin is coming off of it though. so i guess its progress.
