 Want to buy one

hey everybody on this forum!
I hope to get an answer from all the pro`s overhere, although I don`t have a tegu(I have other lizards)my big wish is to buy a BW argentinian.I read this forum every day and learned a lot .
Now I think of getting one,but it is not a hatchling, and I have no Idea if it is handled a lot.
is it recommended to buy an older one ?so already big, and can they be tamed at an older age if not handeld a lot?because the people I want to get it from didn`t have much time for him as they said.
apreciate some help here.

Do you have experience with Tegus? They bite and HARD so if the previous owner didnt do things properly you may have some trouble on your hand. I have broken old tegus of bad habits but sometimes they do so well for so long then revert to there old ways. I would definitly get a welders glove at first so that way you have some protection and if by chance you do get bit stay still to avoid further damage to you and the tegu.
If the tegu goes into a death roll it can take chunks of skin from you and end you up in the hospital getting a few stitches.
If it is your first time with a tegu i would buy a hatchling and begin there so that way if it bites it dosent hurt.
Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask or send me a PM also tell the owners who "didnt have time for him" to never buy another pet and that I hope they end up in the hospital and the dr dosent have time to save there life I always wonder if these people would give there children away if they could.

Wow that is the most retarded thing I have heard in a while. Are you like 15?
People’s lives and situations change. You dont know anyones personal situation so why make a ridiculous comment like that. If they dont have the time to properly care for a tegu at this point in their lives then they are doing the right thing in letting it go to another home. :P

i mean seriously, baby argentine tegus are the nicest little critters i’ve ever handled in my life, some snakes even went crazy on me, i would highly recommand NOT using gloves, in my opinion the baby tegu needs to get to know you first, that why we would get BABIES, instead of adults, but unfortunately, your situation is quite different, we have no idea if the animal is a full grown animal, or just a couple months older
i think that you need to make it’s habitat just as same as the previous owners did, and again, try not to wear gloves, the animal needs to get to know you first

wear the glove until its not afraid of you entering the tank then once its used of having it enter take it off and let the tegu then smell your hand everyone knows that its in almost every tegu book

There is not a single book dedicated solely to tegus, What are you talking about?

Thanx to all your answers,I think I got the point. With an older tegu it is always a matter of treatment they got from their previous owners,as with all animals as well as people I guess.
Well I don`t know the first owners personelly,so that`s a risk,all my animals I have from hatchlings or puppies(ferrets,etc.).
I think I wait a bit then till I can buy somewhere a hatchling and raise it from the start.
In a few weeks there is going to be a reptile expo not too far away from my city,so hope to have some luck......

Agreed. :) I wish there was one! or even one that had more than a couple of pages dedicated to tegus, or even one that was less than 10 years old...

I must admit I have never used gloves with any tegus; if you move slowly and act respectfully, their natural curiosity will usually overcome fear and they will come over and have a sniff of you. Adults are a totally different matter though, and a lot more care should be exercised with them; tegus can be stubborn and difficult to "win over" if they have decided to take a dislike to you. Unless you have some real desire to take on this tegu in particular, I would say that you’re probably better off with a youngster. Babies should start appearing on classifieds any time now, so save yourself some hassle and wait until you can visit a breeder or shop and pick out exactly the one you want :)
